DELAYED FOOTWEAR ORDERS
INCREASE IN PRICES Considerable delay in obtaining their requirements from footwear factories in New Zealand was being experienced, said an Invercargill footwear retailer yesterday. In one case an order had been given to an Auckland factory this month for a quantity of girls’ shoes. He had received a reply stating that it would not be possible to make delivery before July. Because of an increase in the price of leather, the factory stated, the prices of footwear had been increased. The retailer said that girls’ shoes he previously paid 6/6 for were now 7/1. A line at 6/11 had been increased to 7/10 and another at 7/8 had gone up to 8/7. New Zealand-made shoes of average quality had been delivered in December at an invoice price of 10/6. Similar shoes received yesterday were found to be of poorer quality, but the invoice price had risen to 13/3, an increase of 2/9. An order had been placed with a Christchurch factory for a line of women’s shoes, but because of the exceptional demand the factory had been compelled to extend its delivery period from April till early in August. It was not expected that the increases in price would be felt by the public till later in the year, as fairly good stocks of footwear bought before the price had been raised were held.
