WYNDHAM

ENJOYABLE SEASON EXPERIENCED ANNUAL MEETING OF GOLF CLUB The president, Mr S. Rice, presided over a big attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Wyndham Golf Club, which was held in the athenaeum. In moving the adoption of the annual report, Mr Rice said the season had been an enjoyable one in every way. There was a credit balance of about £2 10/- on the year’s working, which was most satisfactory. With the prospect of the membership being greatly increased this year the club has every hope of the incoming season being a most prosperous one. The annual report stated: “The playing conditions during the year were, on the whole, favourable and the club competitions and championship games were carried through with very little alteration of the schedule The championships of the club were won by:—A -grade men’s championship, Mr P. Barnett; A grade women’s .championship, Miss L. Rice; intermediate grade championship, Mr V. Milne; B grade men’s championship, Mi- R. Gibson; B grade women’s championship, Miss F. Milne. “A tournament held on Dominion Day, while proving most enjoyable from the players’ point of view, was not a great financial success—in fact the club lost a few shillings on the day. A change of date may be worth considering by the executive if it is desired to continue these tournaments. The club made an unsuccessful challenge for the Laing Shield. Two interclub matches were played during the year: Otatara visited Wyndham, and the local club travelled to Gore More of these matches would be welcome. The grounds are improving each year and should be in first-class order for the new season. , “Our membership increased slightly during the year, but we would hke many more members, both men and women. The club thanks the club captain, Dr Baird, the executive committee and all the club officials who helped to make the season so enjoyable, also the Women’s Club for its support and for the supervision of the social activities.” The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr S. Rice; vice-presidents, Messrs M. Tangney and C. G Davey; captain, Dr J. H. Baird; secretary, Mr P B. Barnett; committee, Messrs V. H. Milne, M. C. Rice, W. Irvine, E. Christianson and N. W. Stark; auditor, Mr C. W. Rout. Subscriptions were fixed at the same irate as last year: £2 for men and £1 for women. . Opening day was set down for Saturday, when the usual mixed foursomes will be played. , A recommendation that the Mens Club become affiliated with the New Zealand Golf Council was discussed and it was left to the committee to inquire further into the matter with power to act. A request from the Womens Club that it be permitted to hold its annual tournament on Saturday, April 29, was deferred back to their committee, with the recommendation that the date be altered. A further request from the Women’s Club that a telephone be installed for the use of the secretary was favourably received FOOTBALL CLUB The annual meeting of the Wyndham Football Club was held in the, athenaeum. The president, the Rev. G. D. Falconer, presided over an attendance of 17. The chairman referred to the loss the club had suffered through the death of Mr W. O. C. McKay, a past player and a keen supporter of the club for many years. A motion of sympathy with the relations was passed. Valli, W. Thompson, A Thompson, D. Findlay, R. O’Donnell, W. Richardson, D. Mclvor and C. Gabites. The question of installing stronger lights on the grounds for training purposes was introduced by Mr McCaughan, who said that the cost of bringing the lighting system up to date would probably be £lO. It was decided that the secretary should inquire into the cost and bring the matter up at the first meeting of the committee. It was decided to enter first, second and third grade teams in the competitions, although the prospects of fielding a senior fifteen, it was stated, did not look bright at present. Mr McCaughan, as the clubs representative on the general committee of the physical fitness movement, outlined what the proposed procedure would be at the demonstration and also the part the footballers were expected to play. After a short discussion, during which the difficulty the club would have in securing enough players to take any part in the display was pointed out, it was decided that the club be represented in the procession and, if possible, take part in a seven-a-side tournament. The delegates were' instructed to support the notice of motion from the Mataura Club that the management committee of the sub-union should in future be composed of the delegates appointed to represent the various clubs at the annual meeting of the subunion. The chairman presented the cups for the most improved senior and junior players to A. Morris and L. Milne respectively. Mr Clarke also spoke. Mr Falconer and Mr Clarke offered similar trophies for this year. METHODIST CHURCH Members of the Wyndham Methodist Church held their annual harvest thanksgiving service, when the Rev. N. Challenger preached an appropriate sermon to a big congregation. Mr Hugh Thompson assisted by reading the lessons, and Mr E. S. Macfarlane sang a suitable solo. The church was tastefully decorated with an abundance of seasonable gifts of produce, fruit and so on. A function was held in the Masonic Hall, when the goods were sold at auction by Mr Lance Harper. There was a good attendance of membersand wellwishers and the Rev. N. Challenger presided. A programme was presented by the following artists: Songs, Mrs Duncan; recitations, Mrs Diuguid; vocal duets, Misses N. and T. Duncan; songs, Mr E. White; accordion solos, lan Thompson; songs, Mr E. S. Macfarlane. The chairman proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, to the donors of gifts, with special mention of the generosity of the business people, and to Mr Harper for so ably carrying out the auction. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB At the annual meeting of the Wyndham branch of the Young Farmers’ Club Mr R. McDonald presided over a good attendance of members. The balance-sheet showed a credit of 18/4. The annual report stated: “The club was inaugurated in July 1938 and from that time the growing numbers and interest which has been taken in the club prove its need in our farming community. Our thanks are due to Mr E. Rabbidge, who inspired the club’s formation, and also to Mr W. L. Harbord, of. the Department of Agriculture, Invercargill, who attended the first meeting and assisted in the formation of the club. During the year there have been eight meetings at which the following lectures were given: Mr E. A. Nicol, “Whaling”; Mr P. Campbell, “The Sheep Industry of New Zealand”; Mr J. Danskin, “Disease of Animals”; Mr W. R. Harris, “Pasture Management and Root Crops”; Mr F. J. Dunbar, “A Few Points on Banking”; Mr A. Davidson, “Seeds and Seed Cleaning.” One of the meetings took the form of a competition on the best 10-minute speech, the subject being “What I Would Do If I Were Boss of a Farm.” Mr J. Winter was the successful entrant. Messrs J. C. Gardiner and W. R. Harris acted as judges. At the Wyndham Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s show members were given the opportunity of gaining experience with prize stock by acting as stewards in the various sections. At the end of August of last year some members attended a field day at Makarewa, which was very interesting and instructive. At a special meeting in February the club bade farewell to the secretary, Mr J. Winter, who, after winning the Southland Frozen Meat Company’s scholarship, has gone to Lincoln College for a one year course, and the club wishes him every success at the college. Mr A. Howe was elected secretary. The year has proved most helpful to all members.”

The election of office-bearers resulted:—President, Mr E. Rabbidge; vice-presidents, Messrs P. Campbell and T. G. Dobbie; chairman, Mr F. Clay; vice-chairman, Mr R. Robinson; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. Howe; committee, Messrs A. McLaren, J. McKay, K. Townley and R. McDonald; delegates to Southland District Committee, chairman, vice-chairman and secretary.

A discussion took place about what form the programme for the next year should take, the desirability of having field days being mentioned, and Messrs P. Campbell (sheep), T. G. Dobbie (cattle) and D. E. Caldwell (horses) were suggested as demonstrators. Mr W. R. Harris, Invercargill, who was present in an advisory capacity, said the idea of individual clubs having field days was quite sound, and would prepare members for the big field day at Makarewa. Lecturers would also be available the same as last year. He emphasized the necessity of holding debates as they did much to instil selfconfidence in members.

The chairman suggested a meeting where each member should speak on some aspect of farming, and Mr Howe mentioned “Tractors versus Horses” as a subject for debate. Mr W. Brown suggested that their first lecture should be from someone qualified to give hints on the proper conduct of meetings. After a short discussion it was decided to hold meetings fortnightly during the winter, and Mr S. Rice is to be asked to address the first meeting on April 14 on “How to Conduct Meetings,” when the syllabus for the year will also be arranged. In the event of Mr Rice being unable to attend. Mr L. Harper is to be invited to speak on the same subject. Mr Harris expressed pleasure at the good attendance. The Eastern District was very active at present and three new clubs had been formed in the Goro district, he said. He gave a resume of the three-day course to begin at Gore on April 18, when the syllabus would embrace many features of farming, both from the practical and scientific standpoint. Mr Harris appealed to those pre-

sent to support the New Zealand Defence League, which was at present holding meetings throughout the Domininion, with the object of arousing public opinion in home defence. The question was not a political one, but one of national importance, and he would like to see as many members as possible attend a meeting to be held in the Town Hall on Wednesday, April 5, when the objects of the league would be placed before them by speakers from Invercargill.
