FOOTBALL CLUB “Financially the club is in a fairly sound position there being a credit balance of £l7 6/11,” states the annual report of the Winton Football Club. “A fairly successful season was experienced, Two teams were entered in the Central competition. The senior competition was keenly contested Winton finishing in second place to Drummond who also beat our team in the match for the Forde Cup. The club extends hearty congratulations to the Drummond Club. “As regards district representation, the club was worthily represented by the following players: R. Thornbury, M. McDowell, I. McDougall, J. Sands, R. Gibb, C. Calder and E. Ritchie In addition R. Gibb had the honour of representing the combined sub-unions in the annual match against the Otago sub-unions and he was also selected as an emergency for Southland. To these players the committee extends congratulations and hopes they will be prominent again this season. “A pleasing feature last season was the enthusiasm displayed by the juniors. Practically all their engagements were fulfilled and included in their ranks were some promising young players. The following were selected for representative games: R. Herriot, L. Pearce, N. Thomson and G. Gatley. We wish also to compliment these young members.

“The executive regrets to record the deaths during the year of Messrs F. Anderson, who represented Central for many years and also Southland, W. J. Bourke, who efficiently acted as secretary for several years, and M. J. Forde, a past president and donor of the Forde Cup. The club’s sympathy is extended to the respective families.” GOLF CLUB

The weather was fine for the opening day of the Winton Golf Club and there was a good attendance of members and also a number of players from the Queen’s Park and Invercargill Clubs. Mrs O. A, B. Smith drove the first ball and during the afternoon mixed foursomes were played. After afternoon tea, provided by the women members, the president, Dr P. Gow, expressed gratification at the excellent attendance and extended a welcome to old and new members and to the visitors. In declaring the links officially opened for play, he expressed the hope that members would have a happy and profitable season. In making a presentation of a pair of crystal vases to Mr W. T. Simmers, who was recently married, Dr Gow referred to the valuable part played by Mr Simmers as secretary of the club during the past four years and wished Mr and Mrs Simmers a happy married life.

Another presentation was made to Mr W. C. Cleine, who recently left Winton to reside in Invercargill. In presenting Mr Cleine with a pyrex dish in a silver stand, the president said that he had been a committee member for a long period and had given good service to the club during his stay of 10 years in Winton. Messrs Simmers and Cleine replied.
