MATAURA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REVIEW OF PAST YEAR The annual meeting of the Mataura Women’s Institute was attended by 60 members. Mrs H. Thompson presided. The annual report stated:—“Eleven monthly and 14 committee meetings were held during the year and these were well attended. The membership stands at 68, as against 69 last year. Various committees were appointed during the year and these were of great assistance in the working of the institute. Market tables held during the past year showed a marked improvement on last year The institute was again successful in winning the McDougall Cup for display of hand-work. A market table was held for donations to the Plunket Society and gift tables for the lepers. Donations were made to the Eastern District Federation, the Chinese Relief Fund, Maori Fund, and A.C.W.W., and the Philanthropic pennies were also collected. The birthday party was well attended and was a pronounced success, the chief feature being a lantern-slide lecture given by the Government Tourist Department. A bloom competition was begun in December and at the end of the year a trophy for most points will be awarded. Eleven competitions were held. Mrs H. J. Stalker (20 points) was first; Mrs C. D. McConnell and Miss E. Thompson (15 points) equal second and Mrs H. J. Shorter (10 points) third.” The balance-sheet shows a credit balance of £4 13/10. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs S. E. Smith; committee, Mesdames R. Hutton, F. Poskitt, T. Piercy, A. Turner, H. Thompson, C. D. McConnell, C. D. Taylor, C. H. Hargest, R. Dickie and Misses C. McConnell and F. Stickles; auditor, Mr V. H. Ball (re-elected); pianist, Mrs T. Piercy (re-elected). The appointment of a secretary and vice-presidents was held over until the first meeting of the committee. The resignation of Mrs J. J. Griffiths, one of the oldest members, who is leaving the district, was received with regret. A letter congratulating the institute on its success at the horticultural show was received from the Mataura branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. ’ It was decided to join the Pan-Pacmc Women’s Association. Mesdames S. E. Smith and C. D. Taylor were appointed delegates to the meeting of the council to be held in Gore in May. The secretary reported that in conjunction with the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the Womens Institute held its first meeting of the “Keep fit campaign” under the supervision of Dr I. Woodhouse and Miss A. L. Kirk. , ‘ Competitions resulted: Flower competition (Judge, Mrs W. P. Thorn): Mrs A. G. Clarke and/Mrs H. Willcocks 1, Mrs J. H. Stalker and Miss I. Dickie 3. Cherry cake (Judge, Mrs A. N. MacGibbon): Mrs T. Piercy 1, Mrs R. Dickie 2. , Mrs Newman, of Gore, was accorded a vote of thanks for her attendance at the meeting. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs A. Hocking (convener), Mesdames W. Baird, A. Turner, T. P. Bogue and Miss C. McConnell.

CRICKET A friendly match between the Mataura women’s cricket team and the Mataura A team was played. The women batted first and -compiled 73 runs, C. Baker (14) being top scorer. J. Maley was the most successful bowler, taking three wickets for four runs. The men’s team compiled 129 runs after losing three wickets for 11 runs. The match was an interesting one, the women playing the fast bowling with confidence. The wicket-keeper, Mrs V. Anderson, gave a sound display. , x TT Bowling for the women s team ii. The attendance was small at the annual meeting of the Mataura Repertory Society. Mr G. D. Robson presided.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3 3/6.

The president stated that because of various circumstances there had been no production last year. It was hoped, however, that the society would be able to work this year. , The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr E. Richmond; vice-presi-dents, Mrs T. Piercy and Mr D. H. Anderson; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. McGillivray; executive, Mrs C. D. McConnell and Mr G. D. Robson and office-bearers; producer, Mrs W. N. Dunnage.

It was decided to produce a mystery play early in the season, the selection to be left to the producer.
