ISLAND FISHING DISPUTE

SETTLEMENT BELIEVED REACHED GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY REPORTED It is reported unofficially that a settlement has been reached in the Stewart Island fishing dispute and that preparations are being made by the men to resume fishing. Although no announcement about the terms of the settlement has been made, it is understood that the men will be paid 29/2 per 1001 b, which is said to include a Government subsidy of 3/-. The price to be paid by the merchants would thus be 26/2 per 1001 b, 1/4 less than they had previously offered.

Confirmation of these statements was sought last evening from Mr W. Clark, secretary of the Dunedin branch of the Federated Seamen’s Union, who discussed the terms of settlement with the fishermen at Stewart Island on Monday. Mr Clark returned to Invercargill on Monday evening and is reported to have left for Dunedin yesterday afternoon, but an attempt to get in touch with him at Dunedin last evening was unsuccessful.
