The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) arrrived at Te Anau from Dunedin last night. He will pay a visit of inspection to the Homer Tunnel today and will return to Te Anau this evening. Tomorrow he will travel to Dunedin.
The Mayor (Mr J. R. Hanan) and the town clerk (Mr W. F. Sturman) will leave for Wellington today to interview the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) on City Council business.
The Mayor of Winton (Mr T. Walker) has left on a holiday visit to Australia.
The resignation of Mr C. S. Longuet from the position of city solicitor was accepted at last night’s meeting of the Invercargill City Council. In his letter to the council Mr Longuet said that he had decided, because of advancing years, to relinquish the practice of his profession. It was decided to ask Mr James Robertson to act as city solicitor in the meantime.
Mr D. J. Wesney, who has been paying a visit to Dunedin, will return to Invercargill this afternoon. Mr W. M. Norman, who represented the Southland County Council at the quarterly meeting of the Counties Association at Wellington, returned to Invercargill by the express yesterday afternoon.
The Hon. T. F. O’Byrne, M.L.C., is visiting Auckland. He is accompanied by Mrs O’Byrne. Sir Julien Cahn, who has been visiting New Zealand with his team of cricketers, and Lady Cahn, left Auckland by' the Niagara for Vancouver yesterday. At last night’s meeting of the Invercargill City Council, Cr. L. A. Blackmore was granted permission by the council to withdraw his nomination for the vacancy on the Southland Hospital Board in favour of Mr O. Smith, Mayor of South Invercargill Borough Council.
Mr J. A. Wesney, who has been in charge of the Invercargill branch of the State Placement Service for the last four years, will retire at the end of this month.
Mr W. M. B. Veitch, telegraph engineer at the General Post Office, Wellington, has been promoted to the position of district telegraph engineer at Dunedin. Before going to Wellington a few years ago Mr Veitch was district telegraph engineer at Invercargill. Mr D. Ryland, of Christchurch, was appointed at last night’s meeting of the Invercargill City Council to the position of test room assistant in the electricity department. Mr J. Donoghue, of Wellington, manager in New Zealand of J. C. Williamson, Limited, who visited Invercargill with the Covent Garden Russian Ballet, left for Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon.
Messrs H. J. Clark (Timaru), G. F. Rudkin (Wellington), A. Wilson (Oamaru), R. E. Sligo and L. Deans Ritchie (Dunedin) and A. J. Guy (Auckland) who are members of the executive of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of New Zealand are at present in Invercargill attending the bi-annual session of the lodge which opened yesterday.
At last night’s meeting of the City Council a presentation was made to the Mayor (Mr J. R. Hanan) in honour of his recent marriage. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr J. R. Martin) in presenting Mr Hanan with a silver tray and a crystal salad bowl, expressed the good wishes of the council, and wished Mr and Mrs Hanan prosperity and happiness. The other councillors spoke and the Mayor replied. The members of the City Council were afterwards the guests of Mr and Mrs Hanan at supper.
Mr H. Alabaster was elected a member of the management committee of the Southland Cricket Association at a meeting of the committee last night. Mr Alabaster will replace Mr A. McCarthy. Mr E. J. Herrick, of Hastings, arrived in Invercargill by the express last night. He will leave this morning for Bligh Sound in quest of wapiti and moose and expects to be away about a month. Mr Herrick was one of the first to hold a licence to shoot wapiti and shot the only moose to have been obtained in New Zealand.
Mr J. R. Fairbairn, of Dunedin, arrived at Auckland from Sydney by the Niagara on Monday. Mr Colin M. Gilray, principal of Scotch College, Melbourne, arrived at Auckland by the Niagara from Sydney on Monday, en route to Canada America and England. He will be absent for about seven months studying the educational institutions of the countries he visits. Mr Gilray, who is accompanied by Mrs Gilray, was principal of John McGlashan College, Dunedin, from 1923 until 1934.
