Mrs W. S. Todd, Thomson street, has returned from Stewart Island. Dr and Mrs G. J. Yule, Spey street, are visiting Canterbury. Mrs M. Kilkelly, Bamborough street, is the guest of her son, Mr F. Kilkelly, Tuatapere. Miss Cushla Ennis, Christchurch, will be the guest of Mrs A. W. Rodger, Alice street, before leaving by the Maunganui for Melbourne. Mrs Struan Gardner, Lilburn, is the guest of her mother, Mrs E. B. Pilcher, Spey street and will stay in town until after the Russian Ballet performance. On Wednesday evening, Miss V. Smith, physical culture instructor at the Southland Technical College, visited the Nurses’ Home of the Southland Hospital, with a group of children she had trained, and gave a demonstration to members of the Physical Fitness Club. This club is conducted by the

Student Nurses’ Association, and has proved very beneficial to the nurses. After the display, supper was served to the visitors and the rest of the evening was spent in pleasant relaxation. CROQUET PLAYER’S WIN MRS HOLMES HONOURED The members of the Rugby Park Croquet Club recently entertained at tea in Smith’s Lounge, in honour of Mrs Holmes, who has successful in winning the McDonald Cup at the recent tournament held in Dunedin. Mrs King, the club president, congratulated Mrs Holmes on her success and for bringing the cup to Rugby Park Club, and on behalf of the members presented the guest with a bouquet. Mrs Holmes suitably replied. Competitions during the afternoon were won by Mrs Green and Mrs McDougall. COUNTRY NEWS RIVERTON Mrs J. A. McKinnon and Miss Eva McKinnon, have returned from a holiday in the North Island. Mr and Mrs A. Evans are spending an extended holiday in the North Island. Fahey has returned from a brief visit to her home in Invercargill. Mrs A. Ackers, Tuatapere, was the guest of her sister, Mrs F. Boyd, recently. Mrs F. Egerton, Tuatapere, was a recent visitor to her home in Orepuki. Mrs A. Amos, Tuatapere, spent a few days with her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Herrick, during the week. Mrs B. Smith, Dunedin, is visiting friends in the district. Mrs Mangan, Tuatapere, was a recent visitor to her home in Orepuki. Miss Gwen Waterhouse, Thornbury, visited het parents during the week. Mrs J. The Orepuki branch of the Plunket Society recently held a very successful Paddy’s market. Winners of the competitions were:—Statue, Mrs A. Ackers; box of chocolates, W. McKenzie; apples, L. Matheson; leg of mutton, Mr Robbie. The funds of the society will benefit to the extent of £7. Mrs H. Brown presided over a good attendance of members at a meeting of the Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Guild, After the usual business had been dealt with, arrangements for the annual sale of work were put in hand' WOODLANDS Mrs Bloxam, of Whakane, Bay of Plenty, accompanied by her mother, Mrs Phillips, of Wyndham, was the guest of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr and Mrs E. Phillips, Woodlands. Mrs MacKinnon, of the North Island, is the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs D. Wadsworth, Woodlands. FAIRFAX Mr and Mrs J. Brownridge were visitors to Gore for the CarmichaelHocking wedding.

PLUNKET SOCIETY’S WORK REPORTS ON ACTIVITIES IN FEBRUARY The monthly meeting of the committee of the Invercargill branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Southland Women’s Club on Wedneseday. Mrs R. M. Strang presided over the following:—Mesdames T. F. Gilkison, James Robertson, Roy Anderson, A. b. Russell, E. E. Boyd, L. Smith, A. Hogg and W. H. Norris.. Mrs Strang welcomed Mrs W. H. Norris, who had consented to become a member of the committee. The resignations of Mrs E. J. Mills from the committee and Mrs W. R. Mabson from the associate committee were accepted with regret. The reports of visiting committees were received and it was decided to carry out necessary repairs at KaritaneHunt Hospital and Anderson Home. The matron, Miss Ingold, reported that the work of the hospital had been steadily increasing and it had now become necessary to employ another st 3 ** nurse. Permission to add to the staff was granted. It was decided to purchase another set of suitable scales for lending to mothers for weighing babies. The secretary reported that as the financial year ended on March 31 accounts had been sent out to members asking for payment of subscriptions for the current year. The response of members had been very gratifying. The following were appointed the visiting committee for next month. Karitane:—Mesdames Strang, Robertson, Derbie, Gilkison, Boyd and Norris. Anderson Home: —Mrs Russell. Gladstone:—Mrs Robertson. South Invercargill: Mrs Smith. Rest room:—Mrs Anderson. Nurse Mclntyre, of Anderson Plunket Home, reported that, at Riverton four visits were paid to the branch, 18 to homes and that 46 adults, 46 babies, 10 older children and seven new cases were treated. At Bluff four visits were paid to the branch, 31. to homes and 68 adults, 65 babies, two older children and five new cases were treated. At Tuatapere, four visits were paid .to the branch, 25 to homes and 30 adults, 30 babies, one older child and four new cases were treated. At Otautau, two visits were paid to the branch, 26 to homes and 39 adults, 39 babies, one older child and six new cases were treated. At Orepuki, two visits were paid to the branch, 15 to homes, and 10 adults, 10 babies, and one new case were treated. At Ohai, one visit was paid to the branch, 12 to homes and seven adults and seven babies and one new case were treated. At Nightcaps, one visit was paid to the branch, six to homes and six adults, six babies and two older children were treated. At Wrights Bush two visits jvere paid to the branch, eight to homes and 18 adults, 18 babies and one new case were treated. In South Invercargill 136 visits were paid to homes and 176 adults, 168 babies, 14 older children and two new cases were treated. At the rest rooms 113 adults, 113 babies, five older children and four new cases were treated.

Nurse Mclntyre reported for February that the total new cases (town and country) were 71; total new cases at centre (babies only) 42; new cases st centres, breast fed 22; new cases at centres, supplemented, 15; new cases at centres, artificially fed, 5; new cases at centres, expectant mothers, none; visits to homes (new cases), 70; visits to homes (old cases), 420; visits to office (adults), 679; visits to office (babies), 656; visits to office (older children), 99; babies under supervision, 992; older children under supervision, 259; letters received, 10; letters written, six; telephone calls for advice, none. The health of the babies was satisfactory. The number of visits to Waikiwi was four; visits to homes, 34; visits to office (adults) 65; visits to office (babies) 63; visits to office (older children) 12. New cases for the month, one. The general health of the babies was reported to be good. Matron A. G. Ingold, of KaritaneHunt Hospital, reported for month ending February 28, 1939, that the number of patients' in on January 31, was: Mothers two, babies eight, total 10. Number of patients admitted for treatment, mothers four, babies 10, total 14. Number of patients discharged, mothers four, babies eight, total 12. Number of patients in on February 28: mothers two, babies 10, total 12. Largest number in on any one day, mothers two, babies 10, total 12. Daily average number of babies, 7.9. Sources of admission:—Mothers: Centre Bush, Gorge Road, Woodlands, Wyndham. Babies: Centre Bush, Gorge Road, Invercargill, Mataura, Woodlands, Wyndham. Nursing staff: Miss Constance Culley completed her training. Miss Catherine Bickley began training. There were 200 visitors. TENNIS CLUB DANCE PARTY AT ISLA BANK The Isla Bank Tennis Club recently held another of its fortnightly dances. Mr L. Parker was master of ceremonies and Mr K. Fraser played an extra.
