PAPAL EMPHASIS ON TRUTH
WORLD DESIRE FOR PEACE BRITISH EMISSARY GIVEN AUDIENCE (Received March 14, 10.10 p.m.) ROME, March 14. The Pope, replying to the congratulations of the cardinals, said that the pontificate’s only aim throughout the centuries had been the service of truth. He appealed for assistance in carrying out his high office. Alluding to “all that is hoped foi and expected from the Throne of St. Peter,” his Holiness said: “Not only those closely bound by the faith but also not a few brothers separated from us, indeed nearly all of the human family, are desirous at this hour of peace.” In spite of the arduousness of his coronation the Pope today resumed his routine and gave an audience to 12 persons, including the British representative to the ceremony (the Duke of Norfolk) and the United States Ambassador to London (Mr J. P. Kennedy). The German Ambassador to the Vatican (Dr von Bergen) called on the Pope and offered Herr Hitler’s good wishes for his pontificate.
