OXFORD GROUP AS LEGAL BODY
EXTENSION OF ACTIVITIES (Received March 13, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 12. The Oxford Group announces that it is extending its activities sufficiently to necessitate application for incorporation as an association, “not for profit but to give the group a legal personality.” In the Chancery Division last Thursday Mr rustice Bennett held that a bequest of £5OO to the Oxford Group was invalid because the group did not exist as an association of which anybody could be secretary, or have an officer capable of giving a receipt for a legacy. On the question whether the group's purposes were charitable, it was suggested that it existed for the advancement of religion, but his Honour said he found no evidence that the group existed for the promotion of religion in a legal sense, and therefore he could not hold that the purposes of the Oxford Group were religious.
