SYDNEY YACHTS ARRIVE

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AT AUCKLAND VETERAN SAILOR WITH PARTY (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 13. Full of enthusiasm and eager to show their paces on the Waitemata Harbour in the world’s 18ft yachting championship contest this week the crews of the crack Sydney boats Taree, Malvina and St. George arrived at Auckland by the Awatea with their craft and accompanied by officials of the Sydney Sailing League and friends, the whole party numbering 49. . . , . The Australian party which is being quartered in the Royal Akarana Yacht Club’s premises during its stay in Auckland is under the managership of Mr F. G. Empson, Rear-Commodore of the Sydney Sailing League and owner of the well-known 18-footer Gloria. With him are Mr S. S. Barnett, another Rear-Commodore, Mr S. Higgins, assistant secretary, and Mr C. Merci, a member of the executive committee. Perhaps the outstanding member of the team is Chris Webb, who at the age of 73 is still a vigorous yachtsman. Webb is the “grand old man” of Australian boat sailing. The fellowship of the yachtsmen from across the Tasman was very evident at a civic reception given to the Sydney team which was welcomed to the city by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis.
