SUCCESS OF BOW STREET

AMELITA OUTSTAYED IN CHIEF EVENT DWYER MEMORIAL TO DISSEMBLE My Mistake was sent out a firm favourite for the Trial Handicap, but was well beaten over the last furlong and was actually last to finish. - Dolita received the best of the start and Osprey lost several lengths before the field had gone a furlong. At the far turn Dolita was showing the way to Green Locket and Balperino. Dolita was first into the straight from Green Locket ana Balperino, but in the run home Balperino finished best to beat Green Locket by a length. Dolita was a length further back third and Osprey several lengths away fourth. Balperina finished full of running and won going away. My Mistake was well enough placed in the early running but was beaten a long way from home. Osprey recovered a lot of ground, but had no chance at the straight entrance. In a three-horse field Astral Flash was sent out an odds-on favourite for the President’s Handicap. Dissemble received all the best of the start and at the end of a furlong was three lengths clear of Final Bell and Astral Hash. At the straight entrance Dissemble, was five lengths clear of Final Bell ana Astral Flash together. Astral Flash made up a little ground in the run home, but had no chance with Dissemble, who won as she liked.. Final Bell was five lengths away third. It was a poor race and Dissemble did not look like being beaten. Astral Flash raced disappointingly. IRISH GUY WINS The favourite, Raven’s Wing broke up at the start of the Dominion Trot Handicap and lost between 40 and. 50 yards. This cost her a good winning chance as she recovered most of this handicap and finished a good third behind Irish Guy and Honest Charlie. The early leader was Moldoun from Honest, Charlie and Young Dewey. Moldoun broke up at the end of half a mile and running into the back Honest Charlie had charge from Young Dewey, Irish Guy and Night Nurse. Down the back straight Raven’s Wing moved into second place behind Honest Charlie with Night Nurse and Irish Guy handy. Honest Charlie was closely attended at the straight entrance by Irish Guy and Raven’s Wing, with Mendel at the head of the others. In the run home Irish Guy outstayed Honest Charlie and came on to win by two lengths. Raven’s Wing was two lengths further back third, a neck in front of Mendel. The winner was always well placed in the running and was excellently handled by the Winton trainer, F. Langford. TAPANUI HANDICAP In a three-horse field Amelita was backed down to a short price in the Tapanui Handicap, but her colours were lowered by Bow Street. Vanity Queen lost several lengths at the start and with seven furlongs to go Amelita and Bow Street were together with Vanity Queen three lengths further back. Amelita and Bow Street raced together down the back and into the straight Amelita shaded Bow Street with Vanity Queen three lengths further back. In the run home Bow Street finished too well for Amelita and got up to win by half a-length. Vanity Queen, who came with a late run, was a length and a-half further back third. Bow Street’s effort was a good one as he raced on the outside of Amelita right through and outstayed her over the last furlong. The time of 2min 9sec represented a useful effort. The Dissemble-Pink Bond bracket was backed down to an odds-on price for the Dwyer Memorial Handicap, and Dissemble completed the double by winning comfortably. Strip and Gipsy Fair were badly left in a straggling start and at the far / turn Dissemble had charge from Western Song, Pink Bond and Dolita. Dissenible was well clear at the straight entrance and she was not seriously challenged in the run home to beat Western Song by four lengths. Gipsy Fair was two lengths further back third and Dolita a moderate fourth. It was a poor start and Dissemble won as easily as 'she did earlier, in the day. Western Song beat the others as decisively as he was beaten and Gipsy Fair did well to get up for third after losing ground at the start. Strip was hopelessly left at the start FAVOURITE BEATEN Young Dewey and Cirrus broke up at the start of the Fassifem Trot Handicap and Waterloo Direct took up the running from Raven’s Wing and Our Guy. With seven furlongs to go Waterloo Direct was showing the way to Moldoun, Raven’s Wing and Our Guy. Loyal Emblem moved up down the back straight and displaced Waterloo Direct in the lead at the far turn. Loyal Emblem’s run was short-lived and running to the straight Raven’s Wing went

to the front. At this stage she was closely attended by Loyal Emblem, Waterloo Direct and Moldoun. Raven’s Wing was not challenged in the run home and came on to win by six lengths from Waterloo Direct. Our Guy was eight lengths away third ahead of Loyal Emblem and Young Dewey. Raven’s Wing raced right up to her form of earlier in the day and her win was a most decisive one. Loyal Emblem showed a good turn of speed, but was one of the first beaten. Another three-horse field paraded for the Quin Memorial Handicap, in which Half and Half was slightly better backed than Song Boy. Song Boy made the early running, but with seven furlongs to go Half and Half went to the front and racing down the back he was a length clear of Song Boy with Bow Street three lengths further back. Half and Half was two lengths clear at the far turn and he increased this lead to four lengths at the straight entrance. He was not seriously challenged in the run home and won comfortably by three lengths from Song Boy, with Bow Street five lengths further back third. The winner returned a surprisingly good dividend, but it was a poor race. Gipsy Fair made amends for her unlucky defeat earlier in the day when she won the Stewards’ Handicap and returned a useful dividend. Gipsy Fair was the smartest to jump out and at the end of two furlongs was a length and a-half clear of Final Bell, Aravane and Vanity Queen. There was no change in the order racing to the straight, where Gipsy Fair was three lengths clear of Final Bell, Aravane and Vanity Queen. Aravane made a great effort to overhaul the leader in the straight and got to within a length of her. Final Bell was a moderate third and then came Vanity Queen.

WINTON JOCKEY CLUB Handicaps Declared MILFORD TOP WEIGHT IN CUP (United Press Association) TIMARU, February 5. Following are the handicaps for the first day of the Winton Jockey Club’s meeting on February 17 and 18:—

ON INVERCARGILL TRACKS SATURDAY MORNING’S TRAINING HORSES ENGAGED AT DUNEDIN The work of horses engaged at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting, this week was the centre of interest at the Invercargill tracks on Saturday morning. Light rain fell throughout training operations and the course proper, with the poles about 30 feet out, was inclined to be greasy on top, but at the same time it provided good going. Both Galleon and Wild Career, who were slightly lame after working on Thursday morning, got through useful tasks and have made complete recoveries. Sailing Lady (Barclay) and Wild Career (R. Humphries) were paired over five furlongs, but Wild Career jumped away three or four lengths ahead of his mate. They finished together in lmin 5 2-ssec, the last half in 52 3-ssec. Sailing Lady was right up with Wild Career at the post and this was a particularly good effort. Boswell (R. Humphries) and Jedburgh (Barclay) were together at the end of a mile in lmin 48 4-ssec, the last half in 54 3-ssec. Boswell was doing his work comfortably right through. In spite of the soreness which has troubled her, Jedburgh continues to gallop well. Brilliant Boa (Gray) was responsible for the best half-mi*- of the morning —5O 2-ssec, and dir i well. Milford (R. Humphries) and a Woodend mare (Barclay) sprinted half a mile in 54 3-ssec, and Royal Vane (Baker) and Gold Robe (Preston) completed a similar task in 55sec. ' Foxlove (Barclay), Ashaway (R. Humphries), Galleon (Preston) and Mona’s Song (W. Ellis) jumped away from the mile and a-quarter post running the full journey in 2min 16 l-ssec, the last mile in lmin 48 4-ssec and the last half in 54- 4-ssec. Foxlove and Mona’s Song made all the pace and with half a mile to go the pair were four or five lengths ahead of Galleon with Mona’s Song close up. It was an excellent trial by Foxlove who worked

much more generously than usual and was staying on at the finish. Galleon made up a lot of ground over the last half and did not show any signs of soreness after hitting himself on Thursday morning. Ashaway’s effort was a real good one, while Mona’s Song is right at her best, although she has been allowed to drop out of her Dunedin Cup engagement. Waitoru (Barclay) ran an easy six furlongs in lmin 24 l-ssec and could have done much better. Astral Light (R. Humphries) and Guste (Strathern) were together at the end of six furlongs in lmin 22sec, the last half in 54 2-5.

Baitruin (Strathern) ran right away from Blissful Lady (Ward), over six furlongs in lmin 19sec, the last half in 54 2-ssec. Blissful Lady is not a generous worker and the sting out of the ground suited Baitruin.
