SEVERAL SMALL FIELDS

Dissemble’s Double Success HALF AND HALF WINS DECISIVELY DROP IN TOTALIZATOR AND GATE RETURNS The small fields at the annual fixture of the Tapanui Racing Club on Saturday robbed the racing of a great deal of interest and the meeting was not as successful as the majority the club has held in recent years. The racing was keenly contested and in the circumstances the totalizator turnover, over £3556, was quite satisfactory. This, however, was a decrease of £1751 on last year’s total of £5307. The gate receipts also showed a decline, Saturday’s takings amounting to £ll7 5/-, as against £142 10/-, a decrease of £25 5/-. The weather was fine and the track in fast order.

Only two favourites were successful during the afternoon, and several surprisingly good dividends were returned. Three events were contested by threehorse fields, the trotting events drawing the biggest fields of the day. Bow Street put up a sound performance to win the Tapanui Handicap, as he disputed the lead with the favourite, Amelita, right through the running and outstayed her in the run home. The Dwyer Memorial Handicap was won by Dissemble, who also won the President’s Handicap. Dissemble won both these races comfortably. Half and Half scored an effortless win in the Quin Memorial Handicap and Gipsy Fair won the Stewards’ Handicap from end to end. The meeting was well conducted and was concluded well up to time. The enthusiasm shown by the honorary stedards, at the head of which was the president, Mr J. A. McDonald, and the secretary, Mr T. Edgar, was chiefly responsible for the smooth running of the fixture. The work of the starter, Mr W. R. Quin, left much to- be desired. There should have been little difficulty with the small fields he had to handle, but on several occasions horses were left badly. Flat-footed starts were not attempted and an effort to walk the fields in saw riders endeavouring to anticipate the start in several cases. Tlie results are as follows:
