PINK BOND TO REAPPEAR

Western Song’s Varied Programme CORBAN SCHOOLED AT WINTON . Dunedin, acceptances close at 5 p.m. tomorrow. Handicaps for the Winton meeting will be printed on Monday. The first race at Tapanui on Saturday will start at 12.30 p.m. At Tapanui

G. Barclay has been engaged to ride Moonraider, Dolita and Western S°ng at Tapanui while R. J. Mackie will be on Osprey and Pink Bond. C. Ward will ride Amelita and J. L. Strathern Astral Flash. Recovered

King Willow has apparently made a good recovery from the injuries he received at the Southland summer meeting, as he has been nominated to race at Dunedin and as a steeplechaser at Winton. Varied Programme

There is some variety attached to Western Song’s programme during the next few weeks. At Tapanui. on Saturday he is to race as a sprinter; at Wingatui as a hurdler; at Winton as a steeplechaser and at Gore as a sprinter again. Slightly Sore

Fleet Street was slightly sore after racing at Wairio and has been eased in his work. If he recovers sufficiently he will be produced on the second day at Winton and Gore, his only engagements at coming meetings. Strong Hand

With Bow Street, Foxlove, Galleon and Mona’s Song, F. W. Bibs holds a strong hand in the Winton Cup but it is unlikely that all will go to the post as Foxlove is also engaged in the sprint and Mona’s Song in the mile. Lochie River ’ (

Although Lochie River has been nominated for the Dunedin meeting present intentions are to reserve mm for the Winton and Gore meetings. The Weathervane gelding has until recently been held on lease but has now been purchased outright by Mr A. T. Burnett. On Injured List

Panara, who was injured when being taken to the Wairio meeting, is still receiving attention and is unlikely to rdce for some time. An effort will be made to have her ready for the hunters’ flat event at the Birchwood meeting. Recommissioned

Kelly the Crow has been taken up by H. Morton at Winton and the Tractor gelding is carrying a lot of, condition. He has recovered from the injuries which put him out of action last Easter. Half-Brother to Trisox : j ' ■■

Chanty Man is the name under which a four-year-old half-brother by Balboa to Trisox will race. A steeplechasing career is intended for him but he will first be tried on the flat, and has been nominated to appear at Winton. Next Start

Although Boaform was not produced at Wairio there was nothing amiss with her and she is right back to her best. Her record so far is 100 per cent, and there appears good reason for some of the high opinions expressed of her. Waitoru

Waitoru has freshened up after his holiday racing and bears a bright appearance but he has not been galloping as well as expected. The hard race he had in heavy going at Wingatui was the cause of him going off colour as up to that time he had done particularly well.

Corban Schooled Corban was schooled at Winton during the week and the Balboa gelding gave a good showing. He is engaged to make his first appearance as a steeplechaser at the Winton meeting this month and although he has Been in work only a short time he will strip well forward as he did a good amount of work on his owner’s farm.

To Reappear Pink Bond is to reappear at Tapanui after an absence of more than 12 months. Pink Bond’s only success to date was in the Dominion Handicap at Wingatui as a two-year-old last season when her time of 48 4-ssec for the four furlongs represented a track record. The Pink Coat filly has furnished into a good type of three-year-old and in her track work she has shown that she has lost none of her brilliance.

Changed Among the notifications in the Racing Calendar is a change of the , name of the three-year-old colt who won at Dunedin as Atwa Rere to the correct Maori, Atua'Rere. Queen Of Song In the Invercargill Cup Queen of Song 9.0 beat Nightwings 8.12, and on the following day the Washdyke mare’ won the Southland Handicap. In the Dunedin Cup, Queen of Song is still only 21b above the Wingatui mare. TaM Colt Defaulter continues to grow, and the crack three-year-old measures about 16J hands. He comes of a giant family, as Defoe stands well over 17 hands, and Hurry On (sire of Defoe) was a big horse. A Newcomer La Boca, who has been nominated for the steeplechase events at Winton, is a member of H. Morton’s team, and has shaped well in the schooling he has done. He is an aged gelding by Balboa from Pink Sunrise, by Tractor from AU Pink, by All Red. Galleon’s Condition Although he has raced only once this season Galleon will strip in excellent order when he takes his place in the Dunedin Cup this month. He was given a run at the Southland meeting during the holidays when he put up a creditable showing while his track work since has indicated that he is fast approaching his best. It was in the autumn 12 months ago that Galleon displayed his best form, being beaten by a head by Studley .Royal in the Dunedin Cup in 2min 30 l-ssec, a record for Wingatui. Galleon later won the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap and the Oamaru Cup. Incorrect Defaulter’s Wellington Cup win with 8.11 has been hailed as the best handicap performance by a three-year-old in New Zealand. That is totally incorrect, states The Timaru Herald. Advance won th" Autumn Handicap (1J

miles) at Ellerslie, carrying 10.5 (6;7 minimum). St. Hippo won an Auckland Cup (2 miles) with 8.9. Cruciform won the Railway at Auckland with 9,.0 and the Great Easter with 9 9, and Nonette won the Auckland Easter with 9.11. Amythas captured a Dunedin Cup with 9.1, these races being run when the 6.7 minimum was in operation.

Weight Reductions The extreme heat on January 14, caused almost record weight reductions among jockeys at Warwick Farm. After the last race Maurice McCarten, the former New Zealand jockey., found he weighed 7.12 instead of his normal 8.4. “I had half a dozen ginger beers, too, and should really have been nearly 9.0,” he said. E. Bartie dropped from his normal 7.12 to 7.5, his lowest weight since he was an apprentice fifteen years ago.

Additional Sales Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd., advise that since the Yearling Sales a big number of passed in lots has been disposed of privately. The principal sales included the Defoe colt from Oread which was disposed of at 800 guineas to Mr U. Shannon for export to West Australia, and the Fox-bridge-Prolyxo filly to Mrs W. Richmond, Hastings, at 500 guineas. The sale of the Defoe colt to Australia brings the total number of yearlings purchased for that country at the National Sales to 51 and the total amount expended by buyers from that part to 20,595 guineas. As the purchases of brood mares, and so on, made at the Elderslie dispersal sale for Australia together with private sales from the Dominion during the past week total close on 9000 guineas, the total amount invested by Australia in bloodstock during the past fortnight exceeds £30,000, which is a very tidy sum indeed. Accommodation for the yearlings at the National Sales this year was insufficient and it is the intention of the auctioneers to extend their premises before next year’s sales which, as they occur in the centenary year, should reach record dimensions. It is also the intention of the auctioneers to provide covered seating accommodation for the 1940 sales. At the present time breeders are being invited to give an indication of the number of yearlings that they will be sending to the next sales.

Plans For Ajax Ajax will possibly be nominated for the Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket, but there is no certainty that he will run in either according to one of his partowners. “We are in a dilemma about entering him for handicaps, because as soon as his name appears people contract betting obligations on him. If he is withdrawn they lose, and the other owners and myself are blamed. We like to enter him for the big handicaps to note what weight he is allotted, but we do not like to court unfair criticism.” Ajax has not raced since he won the C. B. Fisher Plate on the final day of the Melbourne Cup meeting early in November, and the club able to feature his reappearance will be lucky. The champion’s stake earnings when he concluded the spring season totalled £24,475. With luck he might win another £BOOO or £9OOO in Sydney and Melbourne this year.
