RECORD ACTIVITY PROMISED BIG TOTAL REACHED IN JANUARY RETURNS Representing a total value in proposed work of £29,218, the building permits issued in Invercargill in January promise record building activity in the city. The total is the highest for January for the past seven years, and only twice in the last seven years has £30,000 been reached in any one month. In July 1936, permits were issued for building work valued at £36,000. and, in November 1936, for work valued at £34,000. The highest total last year was £26,367, in October. The proposed building work in January last yeai was valued at £9603. Something towards meeting the reported housing shortage in Invercargill will be done in the near future, for permits were issued last month for 18 new dwellings of a total value of £20,321. In January last year, permits for seven new dwellings, of a total value of £6390, were issued. The last monthly returns published, those for December last year, show that work was proposed on 10 new dwellings, of a total value of £11,485. Much work is also to be done on additions to business premises, for which 11 permits, representing a total value of nearly £6OOO, have been issued. Details are as follows: No. Value
