VALMARCH LEADS THROUGHOUT

APRIL DIRECTS EASY Win

ONLY FAIR SHOWING BY HALF AND HALF •

• (Special to The Times) OMAKAU, January 13. Adina was a good favourite for the Ophir Hack Handicap and, once h.e hit the front two furlongs from the post, the result was never in doubt. The Rosenor gelding was in winning form last year at this meeting, winning the final event on the programme. Recently he finished third at Waikouaiii to Peacock and Astaire, who both showed good form at New Year. Atua Rere put in a good finishing effort and should do better. Violenta hung on gamely and she still seems to be capable of winning a race. The favourite, Gusto, was well up early, but was beaten before the straight was reached Valmarch was backed to under even money in the Matakanui Handicap. He obtained a flying start and was never headed. Invoice put up a good effort as he was one of those to get away badly and might improve on this placing before the meeting is over. The rest of the field made a poor showing, but they were badly favoured at the start. April Direct was hotly supported for the New Year Trot; The Gore-trained gelding settled down in second place for most of the journey, but approaching the home turn he joined the leader, Safe Voyage, and ran home an easy winner. April Direct finished second at Gore on Boxing Day and is open to a lot of improvement, yet Safe Voyage, after failing to rbegin correctly, rushed up to the lead in the first quarter, but the extra effort told in the last 100 yards and Central Lad finished on fast to head her off in the last few strides. Royal Flush spoilt an excellent chance by breaking up badly at the start and he did well to finish fourth. FAVOURITE DISAPPOINTS The Clare Memorial saw Half, and Half elected a good favourite, but his showing was only fair. However, he had to come on the outer in the straight after attempting to go through on the rails. Thermidor finally won very easily. The Oamaru mare ran up third down the back, but once well in line for home finished too solidly for Sunny Jean, who was always about second. Thermidor was third at both Waikouaiti and Oamaru and is at the top of his form at present. Sunny Jean will be improved by the race. Flagman was a very hot favourite for the Spottis Hack Handicap and he won comfortably after setting the pace. Lawford Lass was out with the-win-r.er all the way, but could not'foot it with him in the straight, The first and second horses had the finish of the race to themselves, Attractive Note being a poor third. P. Gallagher scored an easy win with Rowi in the Vincent Trotting Stakes. He was driven a waiting race and when asked for his effort won going away. Central ’Lad ran another good race and should win at the meeting. Mandrell was a poor third, a head in front of Bonny le Roy. Great Joy found the handicap beyond him, but may do better in a faster class on Saturday. Swordstick, after having been off the winning list for some time, scored in good style in the Omakau Handicap, but if Hanlon had not been allowed to drift in the early part he would have been a lot more troublesome. Valantua and Pink Robe ran poor races, while Travenna stopped on reaching the straight after bowling, along freely in the lead. ■_
