ONE WIN AND ONE LOSS

SOUTHLAND RINK’S PLAY ONLY FAIR SUCCESS SCORED (Special to The Times) AUCKLAND, January 13. The tricky conditions which more or less have marred the bowls tournament daily prevailed again today. A strong, gusty wind blew practically throughout the day’s play and most players found the greatest difficulty in playing accurately. Only fair success attended the play of the two Southland rinks, Millar, Snow, Keast and Smith winning one and losing one and Hewitt, McMullan, Burgess and Ure losing both games. The play of both rinks was good, nevertheless, and it is possible that both will qualify after the eight qualifying rounds have been played. , Smith’s rink met probably _ the strongest rink of the section in the first game, R. Higginbotham’s Ponsonby rink, which was runner-up in the Auckland Christmas rink tournament. The Northend team settled down early, but after leading the way for several ends lost a six and a good chance of holding the lead. Later the Northend skip failed to turn a golden opportunity of scoring a possible eight to account and with it went Northend’s winning chance. In the second game, the rink played as a team and won comparatively easily against a solid St. Heliers rink. In this game Smith’s driving was superb and played a big part in the success. Snow was Northend’s sheet anchor in both games. His number two play could hardly have been better. In drawing and raking Snow reached a high standard and his good form augurs well for the rink in later games. Ure’s rink had two hard games, both of which were lost by narrow margins, the first against Livingstone’s crack rink, was lost by three points. Twice Ure’s rink had the lead and at the eighteenth end the score was 19-17 in its favour. The second game was lost by two points after a close game. Tomorrow; Smith’s rink meets a strong Gisborne rink which scored two wins today and a rink from Rocky Nook (Auckland). Ure’s rink meets Putaruru and Dargaville, the latter rink being skipped by Dr Grew lie, the former Otago Rugby three-quarter who eliminated Keast in the ’”gles.
