N.Z. BOWLS TOURNAMENT
RINKS CONTEST BEGINS 220 Teams Compete In Event EAKLY SURPRISES IN GAMES TITLE HOLDERS DEFEATED IN FIRST MATCH (United Press Association) ' AUCKLAND, January 13. The championship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was continued yesterday when a start was made with section play in the rinks event, two rounds being played. The weather, which showed distinct signs of breaking in the previous evening, held up well, players being favoured with good conditions although the greens were slightly more holding. The wind was not so much in evidence as during the early stages of the tournament. A total of 220 teams contested the event. One of the early surprises was the heavy defeat of the Australian team skipped by Harrison. The holders of the rinks title, H. Wilson’s team, of Linwood, was defeated in the morning by Dick (Ponsonby). The two English players, C. P. and K. I. Cross, who are competing in a Wellington rink, won their first game, but were defeated in the second. Another unexpected defeat was that of Pilkington (Hamilton) who was beaten in the second round by Casey (Thorndon). In contrast to the condition of the greens on the previous days, the morning games were conducted under calm conditions, but the wind rose slightly at times. Play was not held up at any stage, however. Martin (Ellerslie) continued in winning way with two successes. ’Hie Ellerslie skip is a model of consistency. Engebretsen (Wanganui) showed up better than he has previously and recorded all wins. Whitelaw, the prominent Whangarei skip, had a bad day with two defeats. Ritchie’s (Opunake) team was very good all day, its first victory being over Kern (Onehunga) while the other team defeated was that skipped by M. Walker (Auckland) three times winner of the singles title. There was a very fine contest at Carlton between two well-matched teams, Bremner (West End) and N. Bell, sen. (Hamilton). The fortunes fluctuated all the way, but the. local team drew away toward the finish to hold a three-point advantage with one head to play. The Hamilton skip was unable to save the situation on the final head and West End had its first win, having been defeated in the first round by Williams (Paeroa). Lobb’s (West End, New Plymouth) combination and Evans’s (Hamilton) rink were among the double winners. Evans was prominent in the Christmas tournament of the Auckland Centre. Dunstan (Waihi), who has shown up well in the tournament, maintained his form today and registered two wins. W. Ure (Auckland) who has been a competitor in the' tournament for many years, also gained two victories against the outside teams, Cockroft (Ashburton) and Tantrum (Manawatu). A. F._ Spiller, the secretary of the Wellington Bowling Centre, was successful in both his games He skipped the Wellington Club’s team.
