MEMBERS OF STEAMER’S CREW IN COURT
REMANDED ON CHARGE OF ASSAULT (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 28. The four men arrested as a result of the disturbance on the steamer Trojan Star on Saturday evening appeared before Mr W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, each charged with assaulting Thomas Fitzpatrick. The accused were Donald Currie Campbell, aged 28 and John McKenna, aged 30, trimmers, Robert Smith, aged 26, a greaser, and Harold Stewart Hossad, aged 24, a fireman. The police, who said all four were members of the crew of the Trojan Star, obtained remands until December 1.
An application for bail by counsel was opposed by the police, who said another man, allegedly assaulted by the accused, was in hospital rather seriously injured. “These men will later be charged with assaulting him,” said De-tective-Sergeant Nalder, “and if they are allowed bail they will be immediately arrested on another charge of assault, causing actual bodily harm.”
The Magistrate refused to grant bail.
