EXHIBITION BY LOGAN DERBY
Attraction At Wairio Meeting OWNER’S SPORTING ACTION (From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, November 26. Arrangements have been made for the Australian pacer, Logan Derby, to give an exhibition of pacing at the Wairio Trotting Club’s non-totalizator meeting on Saturday. His owner, Mr H. Barnes, was approached at Forbury Park today and he expressed his willingness to visit Southland next week. He will bring with him Logan Derby and another pacer, Lady Marigold, who has been travelling with the Globe Derby horse. Mr Barnes is a genuine trotting enthusiast and he intends taking his horse south a couple of days before the meeting. Logan Derby will probably be sent ever a mile on the Wairio grass track. More than likely he will be assisted by a pacemaker as he rarely gives of his best on his own. Logan Derby is by far the best pacer to visit Southland since Harold Logan gave an exhibition mile at Winton three or four years ago. Logan Derby is unlikely to attempt any records, but it is possible that he will better Harold Logan’s Southland record of 2min llsec. This the Australian pacer should do with little difficulty. GREAT FAVOURITE Since he has been brought to New Zealand Logan Derby has been a great favourite with the public. He has started on seven occasions, winning three, being twice second and twice third, against the best pacers racing in New Zealand at the present time. His Free-for-All victory at the Cup meeting at Addington was an outstanding performance as he made almost all the running and then outstayed Parisienne at the finish. He finished third in the New Zealand Cup and later at the meeting registered 4min 14 4-ssec when placed over two miles, the best figures put up in New Zealand for some time. At this week’s Forbury meeting he won the principal handicaps each day. After winning the first day he was under veterinary treatment, but made a wonderful recovery and came out and won the Forbury Handicap today, in 4min 18 2-ssec, the best two-mile figures yet put up at Forbury Park. Logan Derby is a genuine stayer, a brilliant sprinter and a model racehorse in every way. He has travelled something like 26,000 miles during his racing career and according to his owner is a great feeder all the time. The Globe Derby horse, whose dam, Belle Logan, was a New Zealand-bred mare, will be a great attraction at Wairio and his owner is to be commended on his sportsmanlike decision in agreeing to take him south. Logan Derby will be shipped to Australia from Bluff on Monday week and he will take part at the inter-Dominion championship meeting during the holidays. CHANGE OF DATES FOR MEETING APPLICATION AGAIN REFUSED GORE RACING CLUB TO RESTATE CASE Advice from the New Zealand Racing Conference that a rehearing had been granted the club’s application for a change of dates for the summer meeting and that the application had again been refused was received at a meeting of the committee of the Gore Racing Club. It was decided to restate the case, dissatisfaction being expressed at the action of the conference. The programme for the jubilee meeting of the club was left in the hands of the programme committee. The stake money was fixed at approximately £2500, and several suggestions were made for special attractions for the meeting. A sub-committee was appointed to deal with the matter of a social function to celebrate the club’s jubilee. The stipendiary stewards report abov' the recent meeting of the club was received. Those present at the meeting were:— Messrs I. T. Martin (chairman), G. C. Hamilton, P. G. Ross, J. A. S. Aitken, A. T. Pettigrew, D. L. Poppelwell, M. Green, F. Wallis, jun., G. W. Whittingham, M. R. Lawlor, J. B. Nicol, H. A. Price and Dr J. E. Rogers. GOLF B. M. SILK RETURNS BEST CARDS CHAMPION-OF-CHAMPIONS MATCH (United Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, November 27. The annual golf champion-of-cham-pions match for the Wellington and Hawke’s Bay provinces was played at Hokowhitu today.- A strong wind from the worst possible quarter and a fast course made a particularly severe test for the players, and this was reflected in the scores. The best cards were:
