SPRINT WON BY BIG AUTHOR

Fremont Defeats Nell Grattan POOR DISPLAYS BY SQUARE TROTTERS (From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, November 26. Syntax made a one-horse race of the Suburban Handicap, being the smartest to begin and not afterwards being in danger of defeat. Tommy Guy and Traveltone broke up badly at the start and Escalado was also slow away. Syntax was well clear at the end of a furlong with Bon Chance, Esther and Parrish Chimes the handiest of the others. At the end of five furlongs Escalado broke up when moving into third place. With a round to go Syntax was 10 lengths clear of Bon Chance with a similar break back to Esther and Parrish Chimes. Syntax made no race of it over the last half mile and came on to win easing up by four lengths. Parrish Chimes was 12 lengths further back third ahead of Escalado with Esther well back next. Syntax broke up at the start the first day but he did not look like making a mistake today. It was a poor field he led home. DECISIVE WIN In a good betting race Icevus was sent put favourite for the Empire Handicap, and after beginning smartly and being well placed right through he won comfortably at the finish. Bill B, Silver Laddie and Waitemata broke up at the start. Mankind was first to show out from Royal Travis and Token and with five furlongs to go Icevus moved into third place behind Royal Travis and Mankind where Token and Guncase were also handy. There was little change down the back and Mankind led into the straight from Royal Travis, Icevus, Guncase and Token. In the run home Icevus easily disposed of the leaders and came on to win easily by a length from Mankind, who stayed on to beat Royal Travis by half a length, Token was fourth and then came Credit Funds, Gallinford and Bill B. Icevus made amends for his unlucky defeat the first day when he broke up at the start and covered more ground than anything else in a fast run race. The Australian horse is a smart little pacer. Mankind had every chance and was beaten on his merits. USEFUL PERFORMANCE King Potts put up a meritorious performance to win the Advance Handicap after making several mistakes during the running. Glenholme, Easter Rush and All Kings were slow away. Anna Wong opened up a lead of eight lengths at the end of two furlongs where Golden Miller, Sinbad, Attain, Seascape and Mazaire were handily placed. Attain tangled and lost ground running out of the straight and at the end of six furlongs the field had closed on Anna Wong. With a round to go Attain shaded Anna Wong, Golden Miller, Mazaire, Glenholme, who had moved up fast, and Golden Miller. Glenholme broke twice running down the back and dropped right out. Attain led King Potts and Seascape into the straight and in the run home King Potts finished better than Attain to win by a length. Dancing Pirate was a length further back third ahead of Seascape, Mazaire, Marfax and Golden Miller. King Potts was required to

put in a good run over the last half when he moved up to the leaders down the back straight. He was inclined to bore in over the last furlong but is a very likely improver. LOGAN DERBY AGAIN Logan Derby was again sent out favourite for the Forbury Handicap but he was required to put up a track record to win. It was a great performance on the part of the Australian pacer as a strong wind was in evidence and had the conditions been the same as the first day he would have bettered his figures of 4min 18 2-ssec by several seconds. Big Author and Agile broke up at the start and Sea Gift led out from Southern Smile, Renown’s Best and Logan Derby. At the end of six furlongs Sea Gift was still in charge from Renown’s Best, Southern Smile, Rocks Ahead and Logan Derby. With a mile to go Logan Derby ran round the field into third place behind Sea Gift and Renown’s Best. With a round to go Sea Gift was showing the way to Renown’s Best, Logan Derby) Rocks Ahead, Southern Smile and Morello. Morello improved his position down the back and at the far turn Logan Derby had run to the front from Sea Gift, who was beaten, Renown’s Best and Morello. Logan Derby was well clear into the straight and he was not seriously challenged in the run home to win by one and a-half lengths. Morello finished better than Renown’s Best to beat her a head for third and then came Sea Gift, fourth, and Agile and Big Author. Logan Derby paid a surprisingly good dividend. His driver made a lot of use of him and he proved himself a champion to stay on as he did. After his success on Thursday Logan Derby was under veterinary attention. It was believed that he had contracted a touch of colic. Morello improved greatly on his first day’s form and his time equalled the track record of Rocks Ahead. Renown’s Best raced more solidly than usual. JOVIAL IMPROVES After being well placed right through the running Jovial put up a good performance to win the Bright Handicap, for which he was one of the favourites. Tritoma was the smartest to begin and he led into the back the first time from Sentiment, Colonel Axworthy. Tinker, Stalwart and Jovial. Colonel Axworthy moved up to be on terms with Tritoma with seven furlongs to go. Running into the back the last time _ Tritoma and Colonel Axworthy were still showing the way to Sentiment, Tinker, Jovial, Stalwart and Jesse Owc*s. Jesse Owens improved his position* at the far turn and he was third behind Tritoma and Colonel Axworthy at the straight entrance where Tinker, Jovial and Sentiment were all handily placed. Jovial came with a great run on the outer over the last furlong and got up to win by a length from Sentiment who got through on the inner and beat Tritoma by half a length for second. Tinker was half a length further back ahead of Quest, Stalwart and Jesse Owens. FREMONT MAKES AMENDS Roan Duke, the favourite for the Tainui Handicap, lost a lot of ground and this settled his chance in a fast run race. The winner, Fremont, raced right up to his best form at the Cup carnival and his time of 3min 14 l-ssec bettered the track record created by Fine Aid on Thursday by 3-ssec. Wynan also failed to move off correctly and Nell Grattan was interfered with. Golden Cross led out from Wee Wrack, Harlequin, Marlene, Morewa and Nell Grattan. Nell Grattan moved up down the back straight and with a round to go Harlequin had run to the front from Golden Cross, Nell Grattan, Wee Wrack, Fremont and Morewa. Nell Grattan had charge at the straight entrance from Harlequin, who was stopping, Fremont, and Roan Duke. Fremont and Nell Grattan sorted themselves out in the run home and the former came on to win comfortably by a length and a-half. Marlene made up a lot of ground to get up to be third ahead of Golden Cross, Wee Wrack and Roan Duke. The winner did not pull himself to the front as he did the first day and it was a fine performance on his part. Nell Grattan again struck one better than herself on the day and had to be content with a further minor placing. Roan Duke would have been dangerous but for the ground he lost at the start. SWIFT GUY FAILS Swift Guy was backed as a certainty for the Victoria Handicap, but he made several mistakes during the running and was one of the last to finish. As an exhibition of trotting this race was no better than the other three straightout trotters’ races, which were poor. Bosun, Golden Bingen and Swift Guy lost a lot of ground at the start and Esther led past the stands the first time from Tommy Guy, Manna’s Son, and Parachute. Swift Guy caught his field with- six furlongs to go and running into the back the last time Esther had charge from Parrish Chimes, Tommy Guy, Manna’s Son and Parachute. Swift Guy broke at the far turn and within file next furlong, Esther, Tommy Guy and Parrish Chimes all made mistakes and Manna’s Son opened up a gap of six lengths into the straight. He was not seriously challenged in the run home and won by four lengths from Parachute with Bosun, on a break five lengths further back third. Tommy Guy was a long way back fourth ahead of Parrish Chimes. It was a farcical race as interference two furlongs from home caused several horses to make mistakes. BIG AUTHOR SURPRISES Logan Derby was backed down to an odds-on price for the Recovery Handicap but his colours were lowered by Big Author, who left the mark correctly for the first time at the meeting. Renown’s Best and Frisco Lady broke up at the start and Glenrossie led into the back from Big Author and Satin King with a break of several lengths back to Graham Direct and Logan 'Derby. At the end of furlongs Logan Derby had lost ground and was still 40 yards from the leaders. With five furlongs to go the order was still the same with Glenrossie still in charge. Running to the straight Logan Derby improved his position and he was in third place behind Glenrossie and Big Author at the straight entrance. Big Author soon disposed of Glenrossie in the run home and he stayed on well to stave off Logan Derby’s challenge. Glenrossie was third and then came Renown’s Best, Rocks Ahead and Graham Direct. Big Author returned a useful price and showed that he has only to begin correctly to hold his own in his present company. Logan Derby may have been a little unlucky considering the way the race was run. NEW BRIGHTON T.C. REHANDICAPS ANNOUNCED (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH. November 27.
