REPRESENTATIVE TENNIS

EASTERN BEATEN BY TOWN TEAM BRIGHT MATCHES PLAYED AT GORE In the annual lawn tennis match between a Town team and Eastern Southland played at Gore on Saturday afternoon, Town again scored an easy yictory, losing only three of the 23 matches played, one mixed double being unplayed. The weather was fine and the playing conditions were fairly good. D. S. McLeod and R. McCallum had a marathon match in the men s singles, the second set being decided at 15-13 in McCallum’s favour. McCallum won this match in straight sets, taking the first 6-3, but McLeod was right on his game and the players took game about in the second, the set going from oneall up to 13-all. McCallum broke through at this stage and took the next two games and the match. McLeod was driving particularly well and his good length kept his opponent on the back line in the second set. McCallum s overhead work was good, however, and whenever he got the opportunity he smashed very accurately. It was expected that R. Howe would not have much difficulty in beating L. T. Cockerill, but the latter player gave an excellent display and took four games in the first set. Howe took the next set to love but Cockerill gave a good display and the spectators were given a fine exhibition of tennis. C. A. Sharp and I. Shand had a prolonged struggle, Sharp eventually winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. When this match was being played the wind was rather tricky and Sharp could not venture to the net without making mistakes. The result was that he stayed on the back line and played Shand at his own game. Sharp took the first set in good time, but Shand was lobbing very well and the Eastern man was made to run about a great deal. Shand took the second set, but Sharp, who had stayed on the back line for the whole set, produced better form in the third and only dropped one game. The only other Eastern man to win his single was P. Welsh, who beat A. Deaker in the third set. Deaker was very unlucky not to win this match. He won the first set 6-1 and held a lead of 7-6 in the second. He secured match point seven times but could not finish and Welsh broke through to take the set 9-7. Both players were very tired in the third set and Welsh, who had the advantage of youth, took the set 6-1 and the match. BRIGHT MATCHES The men’s doubles matches provided the highlight of the day’s tennis and some bright matches were witnessed. McLeod and Cockerill took a set from McCallum and Howe, but the overhead work of the latter pair proved too accurate in the second and third and the match went to Town. Howe was in great form and he delighted the spectators with his well-timed volleys. The Town pairs had comfortable wins in the other two matches, but the play was of a high standard. All the women’s matches were won by Town with the exception of the sixth single, Miss A. Sherborne beating Miss McCallum 9-4. Few of the matches were one-sided, however, and many long rallies took place _ in most games Miss Cutt beat . Miss Kelly 9-6. Neither player was in form, but Miss Cutt was more accurate and kept a better length than her opponent. Miss K. Jopp did not win a game in her match against Miss Henderson, the latter winning 9-0. The best of the women’s matches was the match between Miss Whelan and Miss Woods, both players drove well and it was Miss Woods’s ability at the net which won her the set. Town won all of the mixed doubles that were played fairly comfortably, the best match being between McCallum and Miss Kelly and Cockerill and Mrs Irvine.
