SPECIAL SERVICE AT FIRST CHURCH

SCOTTISH SOCIETY AND PIPE BAND ATTEND The St. Andrew’s service at First Church last evening was attended by members of the St. Andrew’s Scottish Society and the Invercargill Pipe Band. The Rev. J. A. Thomson based his sermon on an incident in the life of the disciple Andrew when he introduced a company of Greeks to Jesus. This was the first appeal of the outside world to Jesus, and his response indicated that it was to Him a symbol of the ultimate triumph of His Kingdom, said Mr Thomson. He traced the development and growth of the Christian Church in the East and referred to the world missionary conference which would be held next month at Madras. At that conference more than 50 per cent, of the delegates would be members of the Eastern Church, said Mr Thomson. “All this,” he added, “dates from the day when the disciple Andrew introduced a small group of Greek inquirers to Jesus of Nazareth.” In conjunction with the special service a ceremony of dedication of the girls’ auxiliary movement of the church was held. Members of the auxiliary were presented with badges. The choir sang the anthem “Lift up Your Heads, O Ye Gates.” Mr L. E. Dailey was the choirmaster and Mrs A. F. Manning was the organist.
