QUEENSTOWN

MEETING OF LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL BUILDING OF CONCRETE BRIDGES The monthly meeting of the Lake County Council was held at Glenorchy. Mr L. Lee presided over Crs Lewis, Cockbum, Reid, Knowles, Aubrey and Gordon. The chairman and councillors made a general tour of the Greenstone riding before the meeting. The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) advised that his department could not see its way to assist with a grant towards the improvement of the Beach Bay-Mount Nicholas road. The council decided to make further representations to the Minister. For the bridging loan, it was stated, the council had made arrangements for a £2OOO loan with the local Government Loans Board. The Main Highways Board advised the council th;.t the board had approved of the purchase of a new grader, the terms of which were given. The resident engineer at Alexandra asked the council if it was willing to allow its ranger to operate on State highways without remuneration to look after wandering stock. If so, the board would be willing to delegate the necessary authority so that the ranger will have full power to deal with wandering stock. The council decided to approve of the ranger being so appointed. The Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) asked the views of the council on a proposed traffic sign, the following regulations to be proposed for enactment with these traffic signs: (a) it shall be an offence to pass the sign at a speed in excess of 10 miles an hour. (After passing the sign a driver may thus accelerate or stop according to circumstances.) (b) A sign of this type shall be erected only with the prior consent in writing of the Minister and every application for the erection of such a sign shall be accompanied by an adequate plan of the intersection and such other information as shall be required. (It is not intended to authorize this sign where it will be reasonably possible to improve the visibility at the intersection, but only when the latter would be impracticable or would involve undue hardship to the owner of the adjoining property.) The council approved of the suggested regulation. The Director of Education advised that when the Manual Training school had been erected in Queenstown the provision of improved accommodation for high school pupils would receive consideration. The Tauranga County Council asked the council if it would support the following resolution to the Government: “That the full control of noxious weeds be undertaken by the Government with provision that in cases where the owners of land do not effect the clearance of noxious weeds then such clearance be carried out by the Government and the cost thereof to become a charge upon the land so serviced.”

It was decided to support the resolution.

The secretary of the Wanaka Amateur Swimming Club, Pembroke, asked permission to move the bathers dressing shed to a position 50 yards from the present site. The question was left in the hands of Cr Aubrey and the inspector. A deputation was received from the Glenorchy Miners’ Association about the main mining tracks and after consideration it was decided to ask the inspector to submit a report at the next meeting. It was decided to do whatever was possible to make the Glendhu camping ground more convenient for the coming season. It was decided to have all highways in as good order as possible before the tourist season begins. It was decided to build concrete bridges wherever possible and the following bridges are to be erected in order: Allan creek (Kingston); Cadrona river, Precipice creek (ParadiseGlenorchy road); Kowhai creek and Scotts creek (Kinloch-Routeburn road); Spots creek, Branch creek, and Robertsons (Cadrona valley); Deep creek and Long Gully (Skippers road); and Halls creek, Phoebes creek, Speargrass creek, all oh Mount Aspiring road.
