INCREASE SHOW IN RECEIPTS

TRADE FOR OCTOBER AT BLUFF ACTIVITIES OF HARBOUR BOARD The total receipts of the Bluff Harbour Board for October this year show an increase of £636, compared with the receipts for the same month last year, according to a report made by the secretary (Mr R. N. Porter) at the monthly meeting of the board last evenin 2. The expenditure for the month was £4524, against £5240 for October last year. There was, however, a decrease in the tonnage of cargo handled over the board’s wharves, the total tor the month being 8203 tons, compared with 11,690 tons for the corresponding month in 1937, There were present at the meeting. Wraytt. . , The secretary’s report stated:— “The total receipts credited to the Harbour Fund Account for the month were £3087 14/11, against £2451 11/2 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of £636 3/9. The following table shows under separate headings the receipts for the month of October for the current and preceding

“The expenditure for the month was £4524 2/2, against £5240 5/6 for October, 1937. “For the month expenditure exceeded receipts by £1436 7/3. Included in this expenditure is an amount of £451 15/3 spent on the new reservoir which will be refunded out of loan. The excess of expenditure in the revenue account will therefore be £984 12/-. “For the month of October 1938, the tonnage of cargo handled over the board’s wharves was 8203 tons, against 11,690 tons for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease' of 3487 tons. “The total tonnages for October, 1938, were made up as follows: —

“The principal lines of imports were: —Fruit, 201 tons; artificial manures, 51 tons; sugar, 331 tons; timber, 480 tons; motor spirit and kerosene, 28 tons; sundries, 3605 tons; a total of 4696 tons. PRINCIPAL EXPORTS “Exports were:—Hemp, 109 tons; fish, (frozen), 29 tons; frozen meat, 466 tons; milk products, ■ 231 tons; oats and oat products, 304 tons; seeds, 89 tons; tallow, 141 tons; timber, 307 tons; wool, 490 tons; pelts 139 tons; sundries, 1202 tons. “For the month of October in the years 1936 and 1937, the trade of the port is shown as follows for the purposes of comparison:— 1936. —lmports, 15,155 tons; exports, 6314 tons. 1937. Imports, 7873 tons; exports, 3817 tons. “Compared with last year, there is a decrease in coastal imports of 1091 tons and a decrease in overseas .imports of 2086 tons, making a total decrease in imports of 3177 tons. There is an increase in" coastal exports of 478 tons and a decrease in overseas exports of 788 tons, making a total decrease in exports of 310 tons. “The total amount of cargo shows a decrease of 3487 tons in comparison with the 1937 totals. “The number of vessels working the port for the month was:—Coastal, 23/ overseas and inter-colonial, 7. “The numbers for October in the preceding two years were: 1936, , 41; 1937, 33.” HARBOURMASTER’S REPORT The following report was submitted by the harbourmaster (Captain N. Haszard): — “The following is a summary of shipping arrivals at and departures from (exclusive of fishing and. oyster craft) the port of Sluff during October 1938:— “Inwards.—Two overseas vessels of 10,227 net tons, five inter-colonial vessels of 10,981 net tons, 23 coastal vessels of 5445 net tons. “Outwards. —Three overseas vessels of 12,934 net tons, five inter-colonial vessels of 10,981 net tons, 24 coastal vessels of 7317 net tons.

“The above figures, in comparison with the figures for the corresponding month of 1937, show inwards, a decrease of three in the number of vessels of 23,591 less net tons; and outwards, an increase of one in the number of vessels of 9032 less net tons.”
