RECRUITING DRIVE IN AUSTRALIA

COMPULSORY TRAINING AS ALTERNATIVE CANBERRA, November 11. A spectacular drive to increase the strength of the Australian militia forces to 70,000 men is being put into operation immediately by Mr W. M. Hughes, who was Prime Minister during the Great War. He will be assisted by the Minister of Defence (Colonel G. A. Street) and the Minister of Defence Works (Mr H. V. C. Thorby). It is generally understood that if the campaign fails the Government will be compelled to revert to compulsory training, to which the Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) is at present opposed.
