NAZIS’ DISTRUST OF BRITAIN
DIPLOMACY IN ROME AND BERLIN FATE OF EASTERN END OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received October 28, 7.50 p.m.) LONDON, October 28. Reports from London that Britain is following up the Munich agreement by a new approach to Germany have been received with reserve in Berlin, says the correspondent of The Daily Telegraph. Official circles declare that there is no hope of an understanding in the present atmosphere of British rearmament, which is believed to be based on resentment against Germany. The chief obstacle is increasing Nazi distrust of democratic forms of Government, says the correspondent. The British Ambassador to Rome (the Earl of Perth) has informed the Italian Foreign Minister (Count Galeazzo Ciano) of the British decision to enforce the Anglo-Italian agreement at the earliest moment, says the diplomatic correspondent of The Daily Mail. No obstacle is expected to the agreement being enforced by November 15. The Rome correspondent of The Times says there is no doubt that the German Foreign Minister (Herr Joachim von Ribbentrop), who is at present in Rome, aims at deciding with Italy the fate of eastern Czechoslovakia. Dr Virginie Gayda (“the mouthpiece of Mussolini”) in his newspaper Giornale d’ltalia suggests other subjects for discussion, but these may be advanced to detract from the primary topic, on which agreement between Italy and Germany is not complete.
HUNGARY INSISTS ON EVACUATION REPLY TO CZECH TERMS (Received October 28, 7.50 p.m.) BUDAPEST, October 27. The Hungarian reply to the Czech Note of Tuesday has been delivered in Prague. It regrets that the Czech Government has not agreed to the holding of plebiscites in the debated areas, demands that territory in which there is a Hungarian majority shall be removed from arbitration and insists on the immediate evacuation of areas the transfer of which is already agreed. NAZIS TEST CZECH FRONTIER FORTS BOMBARDMENT DESTROYS ONLY ONE , PRAGUE, October 27. The results of German aeroplanes bombing the Czech fortifications at various points to test their strength indicate that only one out of 60 concrete shelters was destroyed. Sections of the material are being sent to Berlin for scientific tests, which are regarded as most important in view of the similarity of construction of the French Maginot Line. CZECH RELIEF FUND NOW MORE THAN £232,000 (British Official Wireless) (Received October 28, 6.30 pun.) RUGBY, October 27. The Czech relief fund now exceeds £232,000.
