COSTS OF SHEEP FARMERS
ACCURATE FIGURES TO BE PREPARED
COMMITTEE APPOINTED IN SOUTHLAND •
The advisability of having accurate figures of sheep farmers’ costs was emphasized at the meeting of the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday, and a committee was set up to prepare facts of the farm-, ers’ position in Southland in co»operation with, other provinces. A circular letter from the Dominion secretary (Mr A. P. O’Shea) stated that the recent Dominion conference had instructed the Dominion executive to prepare an authoritative statement setting out the increase in farming costs on sheep and agriculture farms in the same manner as was done with dairy farms. The information was required to show conclusively the rising costs on sheep farms. The president <Mr A; R, Johnston) said that good work had been done by the committee which had inquired into dairy farmers’ costs and the setting up of a similar committee to deal with sheep farmers’ costs would no doubt be valuable.
A member: Do you propose a compensated price or a guaranteed price? The president: Neither. It is only intended to prepare figures to show the real position of the sheep farmers. It was decided to set up a committee to make full inquiries into the position. The following committee was appointed: Messrs A. R. Johnston. G. Stevenson, G. A. Hamilton, R. Sim and G. R. Herron.
