STUD SHEEP FOR OTAGO

Arrival Of Shipment From Australia MERINO AND SUFFOLK STOCK / (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, October 27. One of the largest shipments of stud sheep to be brought from Australia to Otago for some years arrived by the Waitaki to the order of prominent Central Otago studmasters. The importation comprised about 125 stud Merino rams from proved South Australian flocks and one stud Suffolk ram and 25 Suffolk ewes, which are destined for the Canterbury Seed Company’s stud at Leeston. The sheep were drafted into lots this afternoon and trucked for delivery to their various purchasers. The Merinos were a good even lot of quality sheep of the big-framed, open-faced type, carrying heavy fleece of attractive Merino wool and tire introduction into Otago flocks of the new strains they represent should have a beneficial effect on Merino quality in this province. The flockmasters who will divide up the consignment of Merinos are as follows:—Hope Bros., Fairlie, 25; Mr George Burdon, Mount Burke Station, Wanaka, 20; Mr W. A. Scaife, Glendhu Station, Wanaka, 15; Mr F. G. Hyde, Tarras, 12; Mr J. L. McPhail, Otekaike, 12; Mr F. D. Bell, Shag Valley, Waihemo, 12; Mr Bernard Thomas, Omarama, 10; Mr W. G. Hall, Luggate, 8; Mr A. F. T. Munro, Kurow, 6; Mr J. M. Munro, Kurow, 6. Interest in the Suffolk breed of sheep is growing slowly, but steadily, in New Zealand. The 26 head which arrived by the Waitaki have been trucked to their new owner, the Canterbury Seed Company, at Leeston. They are attractive looking sheep and are said to be typical of the breed that has grown rapidly in usefulness and popularity in Australia.
