JEWISH MEMORIAL IN AUCKLAND
PART OF CENTENNIAL PROGRAMME • (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 27. As a contribution to the city’s centennial programme, Auckland Jews are making arrangements for the erection of a communal hall on the most westerly section of land in the cemetery reserve in Karangahape road. The hall is intended to serve as a permanent memorial to those Jewish pioneers who were among the early settlers of New Zealand 100 and more years ago. The site for the hall has never been used as a burial ground. It fronts Karangahape road and is between the women’s rest room and the first of the shops. At present there is a number of trees growing there. It is proposed to spend about £3500 upon the hall and already £3OOO is in the hands of the committee which has been placed in charge of the scheme. Preliminary plans have been drawn, up by the architect, Mr A. N. Goldwater, and construction will be begun about March of next year.
