GIRL GUIDES IN INVERCARGILL

ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION

WORK FOR PAST YEAR REVIEWED The activities of the Invercargill Girl Guides’ Association during the past year and what it hoped to accomplish in the coming year were discussed last evening at the annual meeting of the association. There was a big attendance. Miss C. L. Cumming presided. Miss Cumming extended a welcome to the associate members, the Guiders and Mrs Stanley Brown, a vice-presi-dent, who was to be the speaker for the evening. , In formally moving the adoption or the annual report (already published), Miss Cumming said that there had been a big number of recruits this year, especially just before the rally. The numbers were down a little in comparison with last year, but this was not to be thought discouraging. The important thing was that the true principles of Guiding should be carried out. However, Guiding could not spread unless there were sufficient officers to staff the companies and packs. The speaker appealed, therefore, to members of the association and to Guiders to endeavour to secure recruits to fill the vacancies. At the present time of international unrest, it was to be hoped, said Miss Cumming, that the international aspect of Guiding would be emphasized. It was necessary to cling to faith in Guiding as a means of promoting friendship among nations. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Mrs Watts congratulated Miss Cumming on the work she was doing for Guiding, and spoke of the success of the recent Guide rally. Miss Manson also praised the work done by Miss Cumming. In reply, Miss Cumming referred to the great assistance she had received from Miss Manson. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs C. E. Watts (re-elected); vice-presidents, Lady Anderson and Mesdames A. T. McCaw, J. N. Armour, D. Pottinger, Stanley Brown, F. M. Corkill, M. H. Mitchel and Miss Asher and Miss A. Eastwood; district commissioners, Miss C. L Cumming, Miss M. Manson; executive committee, Mesdames R. Pollok, J. Stobo, J. D. Cameron, G. Y. Congreve, H. A. Brumby, R. G. Alington, A. J. Deaker, J. L. Cameron, J. E. Cuthill, W. R. Mabson, Irvine, E. Race, A. D. L. Keen and district commissioners; hon. secretary and treasurer, Miss E. Lipscombe; hon. equipment secretary, Mrs H. A. Brumby; hon. auditor, Miss E. S. Hackworth. At the conclusion of the busmess an address on the Pan-Pacific Association was given by Mrs Stanley Brown.
