BLISSFUL LADY PLEASES

Yesterday Morning’s Track Work GALLEON BACK IN TRAINING The work of horses engaged at the New Zealand Cup meeting provided chief interest at Invercargill yesterday morning. Light rain fell throughout the morning and the going on the course proper, about 18 feet out from the rails was on the slow side. Milford (R. Humphries) galloped a mile in Imin 52sec, being brought home the last half by Astral Light (Barclay). Milford ran the first two in 30sec, three in 44sec, the half in 58sec and the last half in 54sec. Milford took no harm from his two hard races at Gore and has never looked nor worked better.

Ardchoille (Rowland) and Moonraider (Clutterbuck) finished together at the end of a mile in Imin 55sec, the first three in 44sec, the half in 59sec and the last half in 55sec. Ardchoille was doing his work well at the finish but it was a surprisingly good effort on the part of Moonraider, who was having her first gallop over the distance. The Night Raid filly stays on well and will be further galloped on Saturday morning before a decision is made to take her to the Cup meeting.

The best time of the morning was credited to the two two-year-olds Blissful Lady (Barclay) and Mondello (Jenkins). The pair ran half a mile in 51 3-ssec, the first two in 24sec. Blissful Lady had two lengths to spare at the finish and it was by far the best gallop she has yet put up on the tracks. She has always been a lazy worker but she was shaken up yesterday morning. Mondello, who was carrying almost 9.0, also put up a promising showing. Sailing Lady (Anderton) jumped off at the seven and was picked up by Sea Lady (Voight) at the six. Sailing Lady ran the full journey in Imin 36sec, the last six in Imin 20sec and the last half in 54sec. Sea Lady was in front at the post. Astral Flame (Strathem) and Amelita (Voight) ran five furlongs in Imin 6 3-ssec, the last half in 53 4-ssec. It was a useful effort, especially on the part of the three-year-old Astral Flame.

Western Song (Jennings) was schooled over four hurdles and gave a safe display. For Riccarton . The Southland horses engaged at the New Zealand Cup meeting will be taken to Christchurch by next Tuesday morning’s express. Milford’s Rider G. Barclay will ride Milford in the New Zealand Cup. Galleon Back Galleon was brought in by F. W. Ellis yesterday after a spell of more than four months. The Paladin gelding is reported to have done well during his absence from the tracks. No Hl Effects Silver Choir took no harm from his racing at Gore. The Australian 7 bred horse was well tested by two hard races but he took no harm from them. Related to Listening Post The winner of the Highweight Handicap at Rangiora on Monday, Aggravate, was bred by the late Mr J. O’Brien, and Mr K. Austin, both of Oamaru, and his win was his first. Aggravated sire is Shambles and his dam Bran Pie, who was by Buckwheat from Eager Eyes. Aggravate has strong breeding lines. Buckwheat was an English-bred horse, by Martagon from Sesame, while Eager Eyes, by Cesarion —Susie Bush, was American bred. Listening Post was the first foal of Eager Eyes. A New Zealand Cup Trial The Buchanan Memorial Handicap, to be decided over a mile and a-quarter at the Banks Peninsula meeting next Saturday, will be the last chance of seeing several New Zealand Cup candidates in public before they take part in the big race. Fourteen have been paid up for in this race, including Willie Win, Argentic, Padishah, Ponty, Malagigi, Cape Gabo, Happy Night, and Rousseau. Counterblast’s Return Making her first appearance for nearly two years, and her fifth start to date, Counterblast, carrying 9.5, drew No. 25 in the Rimutaka Handicap at Trentham, and then finished so close up that some of her backers hoped she was third. Benefited by the race, the Jericho filly won on Saturday, making her record three wins (all at Trentham) and two seconds in six starts. Counterblast looked the best juvenile of her year when knee trouble laid her aside. Rider For Sly Fox

J. Mclnally is to ride Sly Fox in the New Zealand Cup, in which the Gisborne horse is now required to carry 7.10. Beau Livre

Beau Livre, the winner of the Wellesley Stakes, scored in very convincing style, and it will take something out of the ordinary to beat him in the Welcome Stakes. lie is a well-grown brown colt by Beau Pere from Pass Book, by Paper Money-Password, by Martian-Secret Link, .by BezonianChainstitch, by Chainshot-Sylpt, and so belongs to the Sharkie taproot, which has produced such horses as Advance, Fishhook, Rosefeldt, Tortulfa, Silver Link and Guarantee. The colt is rather aptly named, but should appear as Beau Livre-Good Book, remarks Sentinel. It is a matter of regret that Mr W. Higgins, his breeder and owner, did not see his colt win at Trentham.
