MATAURA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Mataura Women’s Institute was well attended by members. Mrs H. Thompson presided. . The motto was “The tongue of the just is as choice silver,” and the roll call, “A good turn I appreciated.” Mrs C. D. McConnell and Miss F. Stickle were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly meeting of the council at Gore. . The proceeds from the birthday party, amounting to £2, will go to the Chinese relief fund. , , The sum of £1 10/6, proceeds from the Plunket sales table at tne last meeting, was handed to the secretary of the Plunket Society, Mrs R. Hutton, who thanked the institute foi* the gift. Parcels collected for the lepers were forwarded to Mr P. J. Twomey, of Christchurch. • At the next meeting Mrs Hunt, of Gore, will take the Golden Thread and Mr Duncan, of Invercargill, will give a lecture on “Care of the Feet.” The Garden Circle staged a wonderful display of flowers. Each member of the circle wore a paper hat representing a flower and a competition, to find the best representation, was won by Mrs Shorter (water lily), Mrs A Turner (narcissi) being second. Mrs W. P. Thom gave a demonstration on the making of shoulder sprays and several members took part in the making of sprays. , Miss Adam was placed first in this competition, Mrs C. D. Taylor and Miss Speden second equal, and Mrs Wheeler third. , A lettuce competition resulted:—-Miss Speden 1, Mrs Wheeler 2. A recitation was contributed by Mrs C. D. McConnell. A special prize given by one of the members present is to be competed for at the next meeting. The competition will be for the best shoulder spray. Miss A. Winning, for the Golden Thread, gave a talk on kauri trees in the Waipoua district, North Auckland. The afternoon competition, “A Work Bag,” was judged by Mrs Thom and Mrs Hocking and was won by Mrs A. Walker, Mrs Stalker being second. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames T. Piercy (convener), H. Shorter, J. Stalker, R. Pryde and G. Jardine.
