MR KIDD AHEAD IN WAITAKI

MARGIN OF 10 VOTES * — MAJORITY REDUCED AFTER OFFICIAL COUNT

(United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 26. Results of official counts in parliamentary electorates throughout New Zealand were announced today. Mr D C Kidd, in Waitaki, and Mr A. N. Grigg, in Mid-Canterbury, retained their majorities over the sitting Labour candidates and another doubtful seat, Bay of Plenty, was retained for Labour by Mr A. G. Hultqvist. The figures are as follows:— WAITAKI D. C. Kidd (National) 4668 D. Barnes (Labour) 4658 Informal Majority for Kidd 10 Mr Kidd led by 62 after the first count and gained 21 on the recount of the voting at the booths. The allocation of the postal and absentee votes, however, considerably reduced his majority. These votes were cast as follows:— . Absentee. —Barnes 255, Kidd 188, in--formal 1. Postal.—Barnes 85, Kidd 80, informal Declaration. —Barnes 3, Kidd 3. Seamen. —Barnes 1. Total votes cast, 9368. MID-CANTERBURY With one absentee vote to be dealt with, the position in the Mid-Canter-bury electorate is:— A. N. Grigg (National) 5504 H. E. Herring (Labour) 5429 Majority for Grigg 75 Other votes were cast as follows:— Declaration votes: Grigg, 2; Herring, 4; absentee, Grigg, 257; Herring, 263; portal, Grigg, 119; Herring, 96; informal, 36. On the night of the poll Mr Grigg’s majority was announced as 48. BAY OF PLENTY A. G. Hultquist (Labour) 4966 W. Sullivan (National) 4797 Majority for Hultquist ■ 169 There were 629 declaration, postal and absentee votes, and these were cast as follows:—Declaration: Hultquist, 3; Sullivan, 1. Postal: Hultquist, 47; Sullivan, 83; informal, 2. Absentee: Hultquist, 286; Sullivan, 205; informal, 2. HAURAKI J. M. Allen (National) 5291 R. Coulter (Labour) 4103 Majority for Allen 1188 Absentee and postal votes were cast as follows:—Absentee: Allen, 190; Coulter, 272. Postal: Allen, 56; Coulter, 35. AUCKLAND ELECTORATES Four of the final counts for the 11 electorates about Auckland were declared by the returning officers today, these being for the Remuera, Onehunga, Auckland East and Otahuhu seats. In each case the provisional majority of the successful candidate was increased. The provisional figures , for Remuera were:— ' W. P. Endean (National) 8948 Mrs M. M. Dreaver (Labour) 6359 The final figures are:— . Endean 96'5 Mrs Dreaver 6744 The majority for Mr Endean was increased from 2589 to 2861. In the Onehunga electorate the provisional figures were:— A. G. Osborne (Labour) 8815 J. Park (National) 4719 The final figures are:— Osborne 9412 Park 5098 The majority for Mr Osborne was increased from 4096 to 4314. ' The provisional count for Otahuhu was as follows:— C. R. Petrie (Labour) 6645 K. B. Tennent (National) 4.' 23 The final figures are:— Petrie 7020 Tennent 4753 Mr Petrie’s majority was increased from 2182 to 2267.

In the Auckland East electorate the provisional count gave F. W. Schramm (Labour) 8263 votes and H. T. Merritt (National) 5641. The final count increased Mr Schramm’s total to 8887 and Mr Merritt’s to 6261, giving Mr Schramm a slightly higher majority of 2626, compared with a provisional one of 2622. TEMUKA T. D.
