CONTEST FOR BRASS AND PIPE BANDS
DISPLAY IN INVERCARGILL ON NOVEMBER 5 The opinion that the brass and pipe bands contest, which is to be held in Invercargill on Saturday, November 5, should be an outstanding success was expressed last evening at a meeting of the committee which is making arrangements for the contest. Mr J. S. Brass presided. There was a good attendance. The grand military quickstep, it was stated, was timed to start on Rugby Park at 2.30 p.m., and the selections would be held in the Civic Theatre in the evening. The secretary (Mr Alex. Sutherland) reported that, judging by letters he had received from both brass and pipe bands, they were now nearing concert pitch and were looking forward with enthusiasm to the contest. A feature of the contest, said Mr Sutherland, would be a display of the mechanical transport of the Southern military district. This would arrive in Invercargill on Friday, November 4, about 3 p.m. The display would show the modern developments in mechanized transport now in use by the various units of the defence forces of New Zealand. On the Friday night before the contest the transport would parade through the main streets of Invercargill with the First Battalian of the Southland Regiment. The trumpet and bugle band of the Southland Boys’ High School would lead the parade.
