DISQUALIFICATION OF AUCKLAND BOXER
The disqualification of R. Branch, of Auckland, in the second round of the middle-weight final at the New Zealand boxing championships tourney at Gisborne caused considerable uproar, quite a large number of the spectators and visiting officials being at a loss to account for the action, says an Auckland writer. 7 In the first round Branch showed himself to be definitely superior, both as boxer and fighter, his opponent, W. Jack, of Timaru, being continuously upon the defensive and obviously outclassed. Just at the bell for the end of the first round Branch dropped Jack with a perfect solar plexus punch, knocking him through the ropes. Jack appeared to be hurt and discouraged, motioning to his second to indicate a low blow. At the beginning of the second round Branch punished him severely about the body. Jack protesting to the referee and claiming a foul. Disallowing the claim, the referee proceeded to count Jack out, without, however, waving Branch to his corner as he should have done. For some reason Branch then stepped in, striking Jack again, and beiifg disqualified. Branch was easily the master and the previous winner of the middle • title. His action was most unfortunate.
