WEATHER SUMMARY RAIN ON EIGHT DAYS IN SEPTEMBER Rain fell on eight days in September 1; for a total of 1.28 in, compared with s l.lTin. for September 1937. The total p fall for the first nine months of this a year is 20.28 in. frosts occurred on six 1 nights, but none was severe. There was n a prevalence of morning mists during the latter part of the month, followed by sunny days. The weather generally was of a mild nature, with prevailing north-westerly winds. Rain is badly • needed to counteract the drying etfects of the winds. I TENNIS SEASON | The official opening of the Lumsden ( Tennis Club took place on Saturday, October 1. The weather was fine and « there was a big attendance of players and spectators. During the afternoon 1 tea adjournment, the president, Dr £ C. Brown, welcomed the visitors and players and predicted a good season. Mr James Curran and Mr W. Small wished the club every success for the incom- i ing season. j DENTAL CLINIC A meeting of the those interested in ] the establishment of a dental clinic for the Northern District was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall. There was a full attendance of delegates. It was decided to apply to the Southland Education Board for permission to build a clinic and to arrange for a dental nurse. It was left to the various school committees to arrange the necessary finance. The committees have been asked to raise an amount according to the number on the rolls. \ The following committee was elected: Chairman, Mr F. Small; secretary, Mt James Clouston; committee, Dr Boroman and Miss White (Lumsden), Messrs J. Pears and L. Dawson (Mossburn), J. Wilson and G. Martin (Dipton), W. Orr and Whiting (Balbour) and W. Cunningham (Five Rivers). CRICKET CLUB The annual meeting of the Lumsden Cricket Club was held in Johnson’s Hall. There was an attendance of 12. Mr A. Heath presided. ' The annual report stated that last season had been most successful and there was every indication of a more successful season ahead. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3 11/7. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr A. Heath; president, Mr S. Ryan; vice-presidents, Messrs C. Welsh, J. Bain, J. Crosbie, W. Johnson, E. High, H. Heath, G. Tomlin, H. Dore, E. MacDonald and W. Vigers and Dr Boroman; captain, Mr J. Ogilvy; , deputy-captain, Mr D. Andrew; secre- , tary, Mr I. De La Mare; committee, i Messrs S. Ryan, J. Ogilvy, D. Andrew ; and I.
