/ HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The annual meeting of the Mataura Horticultural and Industrial Exhibit Society was attended by about 10 members and was presided over by the president, Mr A. N. Mac Gibbon. The annual report stated:— "The past year has been a disturbed and broken one. Because of the lateness of the season it was decided to cancel the 1938 autumn show. Then seven weeks before the end of the financial year the main hall was partially destroyed by fire on Sunday, May 15, necessitating cancellation of several bookings of both halls. “The buildings were insured and the society thanks the two insurance companies concerned for their promptness in settling the amounts as recommended by their assessor to the satisfaction of the trustees, the money being paid over within three weeks of the fire. We wish to place on record the society s appreciation of the splendid work done by the members of the Mataura Volunteer Fire Brigade in saving the halls from being completely destroyed. “Two prices for renovating the halls were received and the price submitted by Mr C. A. Thorn was accepted and the work of reinstating was started immediately and because of the exceptionally good weather the contractor lost no time and the work was completed by August 23. Credit is due to the contractor for the expeditious manner in which he carried out the work. “The hall is now thoroughly renovated and brought up to date and a new floor, has been laid down in the main hall making it second to none as a dancing floor and the roof of the main building has been painted. A lighting plug has also been installed just inside the main hall for the convenience of the miniature rifle club and the dressing rooms have been painted as well as the passages leading into I these rooms. I "It is pleasing to state that the mam
