CHARGE OF CONSPIRING TO OBTAIN MONEY
WAITER REMANDED ON BAIL (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 26. Charged that, between about September 25 and November 22, at Brisbane with Francie Arthur Miller, Frederick Reginald Anderson and Leonard Edwards, he conspired to obtain money from Francis Albert Blucher by fraudulent means, Cyril Edward Smith, aged 30, a waiter, appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., today. In asking for a remand for a week, Detective Sergeant P. Doyle said he was doubtful if the police would be in a position to proceed, but they would be in a position to convey the real position to the Court.
Mr G. C. Kent, appearing for Smith, applied for bail and stated that Smith was anxious to return to Brisbane to clear up the charge. If in the meantime he could have his freedom it would assist him in his defence. He was first seen by detectives four months ago about the charge, and since then had remained at the same address. If he had intended to abscond it was submitted he would have taken steps to do so long before. Detective Sergeant Doyle said the accused was traced as a result of the activities of Detective W. Ritchie and following that the Brisbane police were communicated with and they sent a cable of instruction to the issuing of proceedings and the obtaining of a provisional warrant. The amount involved was £BOOO. Any little delay that might have occurred was caused by the police on the other side having difficulty in tracing the other persons mentioned. A remand was granted, bail being fixed at £3OO with two securities of £l5O each.
