LABOUR VOTES AT LAST ELECTION

COMPARISON WITH SEATS IN PARLIAMENT (United Press Association) WESTPORT, September 26. Mr T. O. Maddison, the National candidate for the Buller electorate, opened his political campaign at Karamea this evening with an attendance of about 250 persons. He was accorded a mixed reception, but at the conclusion received a vote of thanks without dissent.

Mr Maddison discussed the National Party’s policy, according it his support, and urged the return of Westport harbour to local control. He said he considered the work done on the Pakihi lands was insufficient for the expenditure. Trees should be grown on these lands. He regretted he would not be able to take advantage of the National Party’s scheme of £lOO loans for furniture as he already had three children. Mr Maddison said he favoured private enterprise and mentioned the delay taking place on the resumption of the Lewis Pass Government service. He said that with three-;eighths of the Noting at the last election Labour held five-eighths of the seats in Parliament. The way to obviate this anomaly was 'to adopt proportional representation, which the Labour Party advocated before last election, but did not now seem to want.

PLEA FOR PLANNED IMMIGRATION MR BARNARD DISCUSSES FUTURE POLICY (United Press Association) HASTINGS, September 26. The Hon. W. E. Barnard, Labour candidate for the Napier seat, opened his campaign in the Municipal Theatre, Napier, tonight. There was a full and enthusiastic audience. Mr Barnard reviewed the Labour Government’s work and described the future policy of the party if elected, discussing especially defence and the problem of a bigger population. “I stand for a policy cf carefully planned immigration, adding to our population by bringing in people to fill the obvious gaps,” he said. “One prefers British stock, but people from Scandinavia and Holland also would be welcome. However, the best type of citizen is one born in New Zealand.” A vote of confidence in the Labour Party was passed unanimously.
