GRANDSON OF QUEEN VICTORIA DEAD
CAREER OF PRINCE ARTHUR OF CONNAUGHT (Received September 12, 8.10 pan.) LONDON, September 12. Prince Arthur of Connaught, a grandson of Queen Victoria, died in his sleep early this morning. He was 55 years old. Prince Arthur, who was the eldest son of the Duke of Connaught, was educated at Eton and Sandhurst. He held a commission as a lieutenant in the 7th Hussars from 1901 till 1907, and served in the Great War as a major and later a lieutenant-colonel of the Scots Greys. \ In 1920 Prince Arthur was appointed Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of the Union of South Africa. He retired’ in 1923. i In 1913 Prince Arthur married the Duchess of Fife. Their son and heir is the Earl of Macduff, aged 23, who will retain his title Prince Arthur, who had been personal aide-de-camp to the King since 1936, was Colonel-in-Chief of the Scots Greys and of the Royal Army Pay Corps, and an honorary captain in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. He was an Elder Brother of Trinity House and had been High Steward of Reading since 1935.
