MAKAREWA’S DEFEAT OF COLLEGIATE 2A FINAL OF SECOND GRADE COMPETITION In an. exciting basketball match at Duke street on Saturday afternoon, Makarewa beat Collegiate 2A in the final of the second grade competition. Hie match, although not played at a fast pace, was productive of some attractive basketball.
Collegiate was slightly superior in the first half. Its centres played a clever game and the forwards responded with accurate shooting. Collegiate was leading by seven goals to five at half-time. After the interval Makarewa showed an all-round improvement, the centres and defenders especially giving bright displays. Collegiate was not maintaining the form that it showed in the first half and was not scoring consistently. Makarewaled by three goals a few minutes before the end of the game, but Collegiate rallied and succeeded in scoring twice. The final score was: Makarewa 12, Collegiate 2A 11. THIRD GRADE Exhibition 13 beat Rata 2. SOUTHLAND JUNIOR TEAM ' BEATS OTAGO (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 28. The Southland junior girls basketball team beat Otago by 19 goals to 11. MATCHES IN CENTRAL DISTRICT In a representative basketball match played at Winton on Saturday, Central B was not fully extended to beat Eastern by 23 points to seven. The junior match between. Eastern and Central played as a curtain-raiser was more evenly contested, but Central won by 28 points to 15.
