MR SEMPLE’S ATTACK ON MR HAMILTON

To The Editor

Sii-, —Your correspondent “Now Voting for Hamilton” has indeed written truly, when he states that Mr Semple’s unwarranted attack on Mr Hamilton will do the Nationalist cause more good than harm, as the electors of New Zealand do not want men at the head of affairs who have no control over their tongues and who are—may I say it, Mr Editor?- disgustingly rude. If Mr Semple was not vindictive or spiteful in his remarks about Mr Hamilton (whom we all know is a gentleman whether we agree with his politics or not), I really wonder what he would say if he did get spiteful and vindictive. Yes, indeed, what a beautiful example he sets us in language and nature—in spite of Mr Savage’s plea that the Government is following the principles laid down in the Sermon on the Mount. I admit Mr Semple has done good work in transport and other matters but this language is enough for me. While on this subject, we have all heard Mr Savage quote the Scriptures in his speeches, yet I was interested to read the other day a statement made by Sir Alfred Ransom that 19 members of the House had refused to take the oath of allegiance on the Bible. Is this correct, and if so how does it square with Mr Savage’s statements?— Yours, etc.,

ANOTHER VOTE FOR HAMILTON.

June 28, 1938.

To The Editor

Sir,—ln yesterday’s paper appears' the advertisement of one of the largest boot and shoe stores in Invercargill, and included in its lists are a quantity of “men’s sample running shoes.” I suppose there is no chance that there has been a mis-spelling and that the “a” in “sample” should have been an “e.”—Yours, etc., EIGHTPENCE.
