FARMERS’ UNION DISCUSSION

To The Editor

Sir,—Above the name H. P. Mclntyre is a letter taking you to task for not distinguishing more clearly between him and Mr Norman Mclntyre. I do not think that there are many people who would mistake Mr H. P. Mclntyre for Mr Norman Mclntyre. I am not going to defend Mr Norman Mclntyre;'he is quite capable of doing so himself. What Ido intend doing is to refrain from using bombastic phrases, such as “I do not stand for that gentleman’s socialistic utterances.” The ojd socialist bogey! Mr H. P. Mclntyre has made a big mistake this time. I venture to say that he has not read many works on social problems. I dare say he reads The Southland Times, and perhaps The Dairy Exporter. He may be like some I know who turn the radio off when any member of the Government is speaking, and others I know who do the same to Mr Hamilton. He should hear both sides of the case.

I notice a gentleman who signs himself “Uninterested” giving advice to farmers. I think I heard that same advice given at a meeting of farmers in Invercargill. He was a shareholder in a freezing company. Can that be the same gentleman, I wonder. He should sign his name, then we would know what his advice. is worth. I think he was more keen about having a quiet dig at the Government than he is in giving advice to farmers. He stated that it is only those who disregard the wasting of money, such as the State, who would build a freezing works at the present time. Evidently he does not believe in doing away with slums in order to lift the people to a decent standard of life. I wonder does he believe in the huge expenditure on armaments for the destruction of human life?—Yours, etc., M. F. LARNER, June 28, 1938.
