OTAGO PRODUCE MARKETS

LITTLE INQUIRY FOR

OATS

SUPPLIES OF GOOD CHAFF HARD TO OBTAIN (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 24. The position of the milling wheat market remains unchanged. There is no wheat on offer from the country, and, in the meantime, millers are working on their stocks. These include a fait proportion of Australian wheat. It is expected that more supplies of Australian wheat will have to be importeq to meet the requirements of the South Island.

With a spell of fine weather from now onwards, farmers will be enabled to sow down a large area in wheat. The fowl wheat market is unchanged. Supplies for the local market continue to be drawn from Southland and Canterbury, with merchants only operating to fill their immediate requirements. The present value for good sound fowl wheat is 6/6 a bushel, sacks extra, ex store. The oats market remains quiet, with little inquiry. There is practicaly no demand from the North Island, and local millers are not inclined to make purchases. Values are unchanged at 3/5 for A Gartons, f.0.b.5.i., and 2/2 for B’s, f.o.b.s.i. A few lines are on offer from the country, where values rule at 2/9, sacks extra, for A’s, and 2/6 for B’s. Sales are slow in the chaff market, and any business going through from stores is on a basis of £6 5/- a ton, sacks extra. Supplies of good chaff are hard to obtain and merchants are securing their requirements mostly from the Canterbury and Southland districts.

The outlook for the potato market is not very promising, and a feeling is developing that it will be practically impossible to find a payable outlet overseas. The local market is quiet, with sales difficult to effect. The nominal quotation for best quality is £4 a ton, sacks included, ex store.. King Edwards command a higher price, but the quality must be sound. The seed markets continue quiet and few transactions are being, recorded. The quiet period, however, is not unusual for this time of the year, and an improvement in the markets is not expected until the spring demand sets in. FRUIT REPORT A quiet week has been experienced in the fruit marts. Apples and pears are still plentiful, but choice quality Jonathans showed a sharp advance in price during the week. Low prices, on the other hand, are still ruling for Delicious. Poor quality dessert and cooking apples are also selling at low rates. Heavy stocks of these two latter varieties are now practically cleared from the marts. Choice quality dessert pears have a better inquiry. Supplies are now not so heavy. Small lots of hothouse tomatoes continue to reach the market.. Choice quality cauliflowers are realizing high values. Cabbages are in good supply, but the quality is mostly of inferior grade. Parsnips are bringing good prices. Carrots and. swedes are plentiful. Marrows and pumpkins advanced in price during the week. The demand for lettuce has eased off consequent on the present cold weather. CANTERBURY MARKETS NOT ACTIVE (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June 24. The Canterbury grain and produce markets remain featureless. The small seeds trade has, of course, finished for the season, and the only interest is in potatoes. As the Government has still not announced the result of its investigations into possible markets overseas, most growers are content to hold their crops and practically no business is being done. The nominal quotation to faremrs remains unchanged at £2 10/to £2 15/-. THE METAL MARKET (Received June 24, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 23.
