MAYOR AND COUNCIL INSTALLED COMMITTEES APPOINTED The Mayor, Mr C. D. McConnell, and the nine councillors chosen by the electors on May 11 were sworn in at the Coronation Hall. The installation ceremony was conducted by the town clerk, Mr T. K. Fisher. The councillors signed the declaration after which the former Mayor, Mr John Buchanan, welcomed. Mr McConnell to the mayoral chair. Mr Buchanan introduced Mr McConnell to the new council, mentioning that some were veterans and others were novices, but he was sure they would give all possible help to their new Mayor. Mr McConnell thanked Mr Buchanan for his remarks. He was satisfied, he said, that he had a good council. Mataura was too small a place for politics to intervene and he hoped that nothing of that sort would crop up. He moved a vote of appreciation to the former Mayor and retiring councillors, Messrs Coster, Clark and Hargest. The Mayor then took the chair and signed the declaration. Cr Bradley moved that Cr L. McKelvie be appointed Deputy-Mayor. This was sec • onded by Cr Hutton. An amendment by Cr McAllister that Cr McErlean, as the eldest councillor, be appointed Deputy-Mayor lapsed for want of a seconder.
