MATAURA

MAYOR AND COUNCIL INSTALLED COMMITTEES APPOINTED The Mayor, Mr C. D. McConnell, and the nine councillors chosen by the electors on May 11 were sworn in at the Coronation Hall. There were present:— Mr John Buchanan (chairman), the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) and Crs L. McKelvie, D. A. Bell, R. Hutton, J. P. McErlean, J. Ingram, A. Bradley, J. Swale, M. Walker and J. McAllister.

The installation ceremony was conducted by the town clerk, Mr T. K. Fisher. The councillors signed the declaration after which the former Mayor, Mr John Buchanan, welcomed. Mr McConnell to the mayoral chair. Mr Buchanan introduced Mr McConnell to the new council, mentioning that some were veterans and others were novices, but he was sure they would give all possible help to their new Mayor. Mr McConnell thanked Mr Buchanan for his remarks. He was satisfied, he said, that he had a good council. Mataura was too small a place for politics to intervene and he hoped that nothing of that sort would crop up. He moved a vote of appreciation to the former Mayor and retiring councillors, Messrs Coster, Clark and Hargest. The Mayor then took the chair and signed the declaration. Cr Bradley moved that Cr L. McKelvie be appointed Deputy-Mayor. This was sec • onded by Cr Hutton. An amendment by Cr McAllister that Cr McErlean, as the eldest councillor, be appointed Deputy-Mayor lapsed for want of a seconder. The following committees were then appointed:— Finance, Lighting and Library.—Crs D. A. Bell, R. Hutton and J. McErlean (chairman). Works, Cemetery and Fire Brigade.— Crs J. McAllister, J. Swale and J. Ingram (chairman). Water, Drainage and Sanitation. —Crs A. Bradley, M. Walker and L. McKelvie (chairman). Reserves.—Crs J. Ingram, D. A. Bell, and L. McKelvie (chairman). It was decided that the monthly meeting be held on the second Tuesday in the month. Cr Ingram asked the Mayor if he would accept a notice of motion to rescind a resolution passed in Afiril 17, 1938, to raise a loan of £3OOO for a water scheme and the erection of baths. The Mayor accepted the notice. WOMEN’S DIVISION There was a big attendance at the Tuturau Hall when the Tuturau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its fourth birthday..
