OTAUTAU

DISTRICT PRAYER CIRCLE MEETING IN METHODIST , CHURCH The organizing work of the Rev. Rodgers, of the Presbyterian Church at Waianiwa, enabled the Western District Prayer Circle, composed of members of various Protestant congregations, to meet in the Otautau Methodist Church. , . The Rev. W. McDonald, Methodist minister at Nightcaps, was chairman, and Captain Creighton, of the Salvation Army, Riverton, delivered an address. He took for his text: “Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdsman and thy herdsman, for we be brethren. The address was an appeal to the church militant to work as a team, not for any section to think in terms of denominationalism, but in terms of Christianity and Christ. Hie members of the circle expressed their sympathy, with the Rev. Mr Christie, of Orawia, who had undergone an operation for appendicitis. An ,acclamation of Christian fellowship was given the Rev. Mr Densem and Mrs Densem, who have recently been appointed to the Otautau Methodist circuit. The roll call showed friends in attendance from Nightcaps, Riverton, Tuatapere, Orawia and Waianiwa. The ministers attending were: The Revs Rodgers (Waianiwa), W. McDonald (Nightcaps) and A. C. Wedderspoon and G. Densem (Otautau), Captains Tatten (Nightcaps) and Creighton (Riverton) and Lieutenant Walker (Nightcaps). BASKETBALL The A grade basketball match between Fairfax and Otautau was played on the school courts, the former team winning by eight goals to five after a good exhibition of forward work. M. Jellyman, and the consolation trophy went to Mr W. Nekal. ■»< SCHOOL COMMITTEE The first meeting of the newlyformed committee was attended by Messrs G. Sinclair (chairman), E. Jellyman (secretary), A. Fisher, J. Maxwell and M. Laing. The secretary of the Southland Education Board advised that the erection of a bicycle shelter at the school would be considered by the board. Mrs O. Hogg, secretary of the Otautau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, made application for the use of the school for dressmaking classes. It was decided to grant the request, subject to confirmation by the Southland Education Board and that a small gift be made towards the cost of lighting. Mr H. Thompson, secretary of the Southland Education Board, wrote stating that the lowest tender received for the erection of the dental clinic was £349, and that application had been made to the Education Department for a special grant of two-thirds of the cost. The chairman said that this was more than the original estimate, but maintenance costs were going to be halved by the erection of the building and country schools would materially benefit. The committee had to find £ll6 as its share.

It was decided to hold a bring and buy fair on Friday, June 24, to raise the necessary funds, and to circularize the country schools asking for their co-operation. It was also decided to call a meeting of parents and teachers on June 1 to complete arrangements.
