SHIP’S GARDENER ON THE NORMANDIE
HIGHLY SKILLED JOB PARIS, April 1. There is only one ship’s gardener in France, and his name is M. Cartier, and if you want to meet him you have to go to the big docks at Havre and board the Normandie when he is in port. M. Cartier’s job is to look after the winter garden on the great ship. The task of gardener on the ocean liner is one requiring the highest professional skill. He has to “nurse” the plants under his care, and many of them refuse to act on the ocean as they would in the soil of a land garden. Changes of climate make dnferences in vegetable life just as they do in human life, for even plants reserve the right to be sick. Watering has to be done with the utmost prudence, for plants at sea have to be pampered and petted. , Cactus and similar plants are good sailors and thrive at sea, often blossorning and bearing fruit more frequently than on shore. Other plants react unfavourably. When the liner recently crossed the Equator on its trip to South Amelia M. Cartier had an anxious time, but there were no casualties.
