CREW SHOCKED BY BONUS

SEAMEN SHARE PROFITS WITH OWNER DURBAN, April 12. . When the cargo steamer Artemisia arrived here, the crew was almost prostrate with shock at the receipt of news that seemed almost too good to be true. Every member of the crew had received word that he was to be given a bonus amounting to several hundred per cent, of his monthly earnings. The ship had apparently made money on this voyage, and the owner, a Scot, had generously decided to share the profits with the men on board. The men were all smiles with the exception of one, who declared: “ If this news gets into the English newspapers, my wife will get to hear of it.” The captain was staggered by the news, “I have never heard of such a thing before in all my 40 years afloat, he said. “It has laid the crew low, and every one of them is suffering from shock.” «
