SEVERE DROUGHT IN N.S.W.

Heavy Stock Losses Inevitable VAST AREAS WITHOUT BLADE OF GRASS (United Press Assn.— Telegraph Copyright) (Received May 18, 10.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 18. Drought conditions in New South Wales, excepting the coast, still persist, causing great uneasiness and resulting in the Government offering to provide relief for farmers and stock owners. Reports by Government officers indicate that an appalling mortality among sheep and cattle is inevitable this winter in all the pastoral and wheat country. In the north-west and most of the southern Riverina districts there is not a blade of grass or herbage. There is an acute shortage of water, and livestock is being hand fed. The outlook for winter lambing has never been so bad. The prospects for a good wheat harvest are negligible. The position over most of Victoria is much the same, but South Australia is more hopeful.
