CITY OF MELBOURNE A “WOW”
CIVIC REACTION TO USE OF ANCIENT WORD If Melbourne is a wow, as an American visitor has said, should citizens with a strong sense of civic pride feel flattered or insulted? This question which has worried a correspondent of The Argus, bourne, would never occur to a filmgoer of average experience.. Every film-goer knows what a wow is. It is what you call your best girl or y°^ r favourite detective story. It is the nighest form of compliment. The dictionary which does not give “wow” is a poor thing. In the Oxford English Dictionary it appears three times, not counting its obsolete uses. It may be used as a noun, meaning a bark or wail; as a verb, meaning to howl; or as an exclamation, Variously expressing aversion, surprise or admiration. sorrow or commiseration, or mere asseveration.”
